"Vera! School time. Get u- Oh....Your already up. Time to get dressed, kiddo."
"Just a moment."
"Vera! Lunch."
"Just a moment."
"It's the weekend, kid! You up for a little fun, you, your mom, and me?"
"Not today, mother."
That's all she said, lately.
It was like pulling teeth, getting the girl, 14 now, away from that window. She had grown up nicely, admired by those who didn't know her reputation or were too stupid to back off because of it. She had cut her long black hair, like silk, to anyone who touched it, captivated by the giant bows she loved to wear in her hair. She was the envy of the other girls her age, with the pretty, frilly little dresses she wore. They figured her parents rich, and they were, but it had nothing to do with it. Most of her clothing she'd taken with her. Truly, she was an elegant little thing, a true doll of a girl.
Before, at least.
She was much simpler since then. She wanted for little, and seldom spoke above a whisper, something that hadn't changed about her. But, even simpler, now. For there was only one thing she wanted.
Only one thing that could ever truly satisfy her.
"Today....."
She chanted to herself, ticking off another day on a neatly self-created calendar for such occasions, next to the constantly open drapes. It was nigh impossible to get her to close them, even at night.
The day passed, and still she waited.
"Tonight...."
She said to herself, common still, yet also quite common, she was wrong.
Lying in bed, she stared out longingly, slowly yet somewhat reluctantly lulling herself to dream, the hopeful words that got her to sleep on her lips yet another night:
"Tomorrow...."
Her face.
She seen her face.
Her sweet, beautiful face.
Those lively, warm eyes.
Those often quirked, expressive brows.
She lived for her image in it's entirety.
Dreaming of her was the only other thing that put down the restless girl.
Seeing her sweet love in her dreams.
Her magi.
Her dear, sweet Magi.
She loved her.
Oh, how she loved her.
Ever since they'd met, ever since the day she had saved her, she loved her, through and through.
"Today..."
Again.
She dragged herself to school, as she had every other day, looking dull-eyed at the empty spot next to her.
She wouldn't be talked to.
She wouldn't listen, as she usually would, the more tolerable, friendly of the two girls.
But not during these days.
During these days, she couldn't care less.
The only ones she would bother listening to were her mothers.
The kindly two that adopted her and her dear. But even then, their words, their reassurances that she'd be back grew dull. The more she pained herself, endured the wait, the more her patience grew thin. The more all else in the world tuned out.
A shame, truly.
She'd just started to enjoy it again.
She had just gotten over her restrictions, her tellings of no and yes, the decrease in idiotic traditions forced upon her by the times.
Or, that's how her mothers appealed to her.
But she was more enthused by the vibrations, the colors and the life, the freedom and the soaring beauty of what simply is.
She couldn't get enough, and that was a large part of what made her so simple.
The other part, larger still, was the loving support of her quaint, queer little family and the part of it she'd created with the love she loved she much. She didn't need anything of she had her. That's all she needed to be happy.
Her Magi.
But her Magi wasn't here.
Instead, she waited for her.
This wasn't the first time, and she knew it wouldn't be the last.
She'd wait.
Oh, how she'd wait.
"Hey...Vera....Kid.....I wanna talk to you...."
"Oh....Hello mother. What is it?"
"You see uh...Your mom and I....We're worried about'cha.....Normally, she, being the reasonable one, would be up here, but apparently I'm good at this mushy stuff, so I got shoved up here instead....So....Shoot."
"Vera misses her, mother."
"I know, kid. I do too. We both do."
"Vera wants her here with her."
"I know."
"It's killing her, being apart from her Magi."
"I know."
"Vera feels as if, if she doesn't see her again, she'll go mad."
"But she will. Magi ain't gonna be gone forever, kid. Remember that."
"She knows...."
She sighed, yet smiled.
"It's why she waits. Because Vera knows. She waits, but Magi waits as well. She knows that Magi waits...She knows that, as long as Magi waits, she will return to her. And as long as Magi waits, Vera will wait. Do you remember, mother, the promise my Magi and I made all those years ago? When we learnt better, as one might say, we didn't suspend that vow. Because Vera still loves Magi more than anything, and wants to be by her side to the end. And a good wife stands by her partner always, yes? If she must wait, she shall. And that's what I'll do."
"Wow...That's.....That's really beautiful kid....I know why you need to wait here."
"And you'll let me."
"....Yeah. I've been in love with the same girl for my entire life. Even death didn't stop me. I won't let a worried mom get in your way. See you kid."
She kissed her daughter on the cheek, leaving the room.
The girl sighed, turning back to the window, when suddenly....
She smiled, brighter than ever.
"Today....."
