Anybody who knows anything about me will probably know that I adore David Bowie.
The man was a genius. He invented himself, and not just once. So many times he recreated himself and his image and he almost became someone entirely new. But he was always David Bowie to us.
The rise of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is probably one of my favourite periods, and while yes everybody knows it, there's good reason to. Space Oddity, Ziggy Stardust, Starman etc, where all great hits that touched the souls of so many. It was new, it was different, it screamed David Bowie. It was sheer magic.
My favourite song by him and my favourite song of all time, is Heroes. Aight call me stereotypical, everyone knows that song. But does it have the same meaning? To some it's the finale of Regular Show. To others it's the Tunnel song from Perks of Being a Wallflower.
To me it's the greatest love song I know. I don't share it with many people. Few actually know why it's my favourite song. My best friend knows of course, so that if I ever tell her that I told someone else about the song, she understands how much it means to me.
Two other people know. One who I thought loved me and I thought i loved them but it was a mistake (it still hurts knowing that someone who doesn't actually care knows a very personal peice of me), and the other is someone I love very much now and have done for so fucking long it's unreal. However I now wonder if I'm losing them.
Anyway.
Back to David Bowie.
Have you seen Labyrinth? It's a brilliant film and I loved it. Okay David Bowie's hair was quite something, but hey it was the 80s, that's what was popular then. Within You breaks my heart, and Magic Dance is a bop. He was actually relatively scary in it, but the amount of glitter EVERYWHERE made me weirdly happy. His entrance was just brilliant. Dramatic, cape swirling and glitter.
Brilliant.
My favourite songs by him are:
Heroes (no shit)
Rebel Rebel
Suffragette City
Within You
Life on Mars
China Girl
Lazarus (play it and I'll cry)
As the World Falls Down
Let's Dance
Dancing in the Street
Magic Dance
Absolute Beginners
Ziggy Stardust
Space Oddity
When he performed John Lennon's "Imagine" on the anniversary of Lennon's death (god I cried)
Under Pressure
Changes
The Jean Genie
And GOOD GOD I could go on.
I love David Bowie. I miss him a lot. Rest in peace Ziggy Stardust.
There's a Starman
Waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'll blow our minds...
