Chapter 20

      [VANESSA'S POV]
I was currently driving to Madelaine's. Madelaine sat beside me in the passenger seat, while her bags were in the back. Camila decided to go with Lili again. Mine and Madelaine's fingers were intertwined as our hands rested on the console. It was a comfortable silence until Madelaine started tapping her finger quickly against my knuckle.

I look over to her, and see her staring out the window while her leg shakes up and down rapidly. I look back to the road quickly. I bring our hands up to my face and kiss her hand. I rub the back her hand with my thumb trying to calm her. She turns away from the window and looks at me. "What's wrong, babe?" I ask.

Madelaine looks to her lap, and starts tapping her other hand on her thigh. I untwine our fingers and grab her thigh and rub my thumb against it instead. "Madelaine," I say seriously. "I feel bad." She mumbles. "Like physically?" I ask worriedly. I see her shake her head in the corner of my eye. "I feel bad that I spent so much of your money. I feel so selfish. You shouldn't buy things for me. I don't deserve it. I should be buying you things." Madelaine says.

By this time we had gotten to the house, so I pull into the driveway. I turn off the car and unbuckle so I can turn towards Madelaine. She unbuckles herself quietly and faces me as well. "You deserve everything you bought today. I don't care how much you spent. I want to buy you things because you deserve it. If it makes you feel any better you can buy me things. Except I will never stop spending my money on you." I say. "I just wish I didn't spend so much money." Madelaine mumbles. "It's okay. Think about it this way, would you have let me spend this much of your money?" I ask. "Yes." She answers. "What would be your reason for letting me do so?" I ask. "You deserve it." She says. "Even if I believed I don't?" I ask. She nods. "If I were to sit here and say I felt bad for spending your money. Would you sit here and reassure me I deserve it just like I am doing right now?" I ask. "Yes." She answers. "Imagine being in my shoes and imagine how you would feel. That is exactly how I feel right now." I say. Her lips turn into a small smile. "Now do you feel better?" I ask. She nods. "Yeah." She says. "Great. Let's go inside." I smile.

I get out of the car and walk around to open the door for Madelaine. "Did you ever take your medicine this morning?" I ask worriedly. I totally forgot to give it to her. I was so focused on the rings. "Yeah, Cami gave it to me." She smiles. I sigh in relief.

Before either of us could say anything else Lili pulls into the driveway with Camila. As Camila and Lili get out of Lili's car I grab all of Madelaine's bags. Madelaine goes to the front door and opens it for me. I go to Madelaine's bedroom and set the bags on the floor. I walk into the living room to see Madelaine on our couch while Camila and Lili are on the other.

  I stand in front of Madelaine and bend over to her height. "I'm going to get us some snacks. Then after a couple of movies we can go get dinner, or I can make us dinner." I say. Madelaine nods. I lean in closer to make sure only she can hear, "Do you need me to change your bandages, or can it wait?" I whisper. "I think it can wait." She replies. I nod before leaving to the kitchen. I decide on something simple and get a veggie and fruit platter.

I set it on the coffee table, and go to turn off the lights before sitting next to Madelaine. They had chosen a movie so Cami started it once I got comfortable. Madelaine cuddles into my side and grabs a blanket to drape over us. She sets her head on my chest, and I wrap my arm around her waist.

After a few moments of watching the movie I feel Madelaine nod against my chest. I look down to see her looking towards Lili instead of the tv. I look over to the other couch to see Lili nervously fiddling with her hands. I look to Madelaine confused. She shushes me and motions for me to watch. I look to Lili and see her lean into Camila's side. I see Camila tense up surprised. She looks to me nervously and mouths "What do I do?" I motion to where my arm is. She looks down at Lili nervously before wrapping her arm around her waist. Lili smiles and cuddles closer to her. I smile pleased with Madelaine's idea.
