"Are you serious?!" I heard Luke holler from the other side of the door.

"You know I c─" he got cut off.

We were woken up by his cell phone going off early the next morning.

"I gotta take this call," he'd told me before he disappeared behind the door.

Whatever it was must've been really important because he said it in such a quick rush.

"What do you think my girlfriend will say?" He continued clamoring.

Suddenly, I felt nervous.

Anxious.

Scared.

This had something to do with me?

"I don't know if I can trust you... well, I guess I have no other choice... but I'm going to check with her first, alright?"

"Yes, I'll let you know... bye."

The doorknob turned and he stepped inside with a hesitant look on his face.

"Who was that?" I asked.

It took him ten whole seconds to say, "that was Katherine."

"Who?"

"Katherine, my ex-girlfriend."

Holy crap.

His ex-girlfriend just called him.

Questions began to cross my mind.

What did she want? Did she want him back? Or did Luke lie to me way back in Bar Harbor that he had broken up with her? Or was he cheating on me this entire time?

No, Luke wouldn't do that. I know he wouldn't. That was just me jumping to conclusions.

"Um... okay, what'd she want?"

He scratched the back of his neck before saying, "she wants me to pick her up from the airport. But I told her I'd ask you if it's okay."

"Are you sure about this? You're not changing your mind?" Luke asked for the hundredth time during the ride.

We were on our way to pick her up.

Her.

As in Katherine.

Luke's ex-girlfriend.

"Yes, Luke. I'm totally fine with it."

Liar.

Shut up.

"Are you sure?"

Fuck no.

Shut up.

"Oh, my gosh. Will you stop asking? I told you I'm positive."

Stop lying to your boyfriend.

Will you please just shut up?

"Okay, okay. I just really need to make sure because you don't look so sure."

He's right.
