Chapter 26: Defeated

"Do you know what it's like, waiting for you?" NOTD ft. Tove Styrke

Luke

"I'm surprised to see you back this early. I thought you were going to stay there for at least a month," my mom assumed.

"I don't know. I just thought I needed to work more so I can go to a good four year college." I shrugged.

"Luke, you can borrow some of our money. We have lots of it. You don't need to work hard to earn more."

"She deserves someone better."

"Who deserves someone better?" My father asked.

"Sasha."

"I'm sure she misses you."

"Yeah, what if I promised someone something I broke?"

"Did you?"

I shook my head. "Of course I did."

"To who?"

"Who do you think?"

My mother sighed. "You can always go back."

"I don't think she'll forgive me again. First, I said that she wasn't my friend when she had no friends. Then, I left without a word, and now I broke a promise."

"Wow, you're a terrible boyfriend," Vi commented.

"Yeah, which is why I say, she needs someone who doesn't break her heart as much as I do." I stood up and excused myself from dinner.

I traipsed out the door and started walking. I needed to think for a long time. I needed air.

Was I doing the right thing? Did she really love me the way I loved her?

"Luke!" Violetta came running from behind me. "You okay?"

"Does it look like I am?"

"Luke, why don't you go back? Find a place nearby Sasha's house and live there?" She hooked her arm around my elbow. "You can find a job in Florida, and Sasha will fall back in love with you and you'll live happily ever after."

"You really think she's going to forgive me?"

"Maybe not right away but if you really show her you love her, then yes. I think so."

"I don't know if I can."

"You can at least try."

"I told you, Vi, she needs someone who truly loves her."

"Yes and you do. Look, people always make mistakes in relationships, but I know you love her, and I know how much she loves you. So, stop mourning and start over. It wouldn't hurt to try, right?"

"I'm afraid it will."

"Come on, Luke. Remember when James died? We moved to a completely different state just to get you to move on. And there she was, the girl of your dreams. I know she's right for you. And she's worth getting your own heart broken."

I sighed and nodded. "Okay. I'll try."

Sasha

(ONE MONTH LATER)

I let them walk away, back into their vehicles as me, Jesse and Chris just stood there.

I weakly let my hand fall on the ground where my mother and Mr. Winters dead bodies layed.

I wanted to dig out the dirt and crawl in with my mother. I couldn't live without her. It had been an entire month since Paula and Mr. Winters went out on their first date.
