Dani's POV

An eerie silence settled over the car as I drove back home. Lexie sat in the passenger seat, her eyes glued to her phone. I drummed my fingers on the steering wheel as the car was met with a red light. Being the talkative person I am, I couldn't take it anymore.

"So...uh I like y-your jacket" I stuttered, "I mean, the rest of your clothes are cool too, but your jacket's really uh... n-nice?".

She just chuckled. "Becca was right. You really can't keep your mouth shut", she smiled.

I laughed and the lights turned green. We talked for a while, she was nice and really funny which completely differed from her demeaning appearance.

"Hey, why do you wear all that make-up?" I asked fearfully because I felt like I may have crossed a line. Her face fell and she looked out the window.

"I don't know." she said, her voice emotionless "I guess it just helps me hide. I like putting it all on so no-one can see me. Not the real me anyway." She looked at me and I smiled and nodded, knowing that feeling. Lauren does it all the time, me I've never been good at concealing secrets or emotions and such but Lauren can. Well maybe not behind make-up and clothes like Lexie but she hides behind a fake smile and pretends like everything's okay. I think only Lisa and I know her 'fake smiles' though. I'd like to think I'm pretty good at hiding to. I mean I've been hiding for the last few months and no-one knows a thing, apart from Laur that is, but even she doesn't know that much.

I drop Lexie off to her place and head home. I wonder what's going on. Lauren said it was urgent. I hope everyone is okay. I may be cut off from them but I still care. I tried calling Lauren a couple times to find out what was wrong but she wasn't answering. Her phone must be off or something. It doesn't matter anyway I'm home. I pull up and and climb out the car. I quickly fix my hair and straighten out my clothes. I spray some perfume from my bag onto my clothes, trying to get rid of the alcohol smell. Satisfied, I entered the house.

It was around 8 pm now and it was really dark outside. It looked like all my sisters were finishing up from the dinner table. I walked into the kitchen.

"Alright, what was the 'big' emergency that I had to be home for?" I asked, sighing as I dropped my keys on the counter and sat on one of the chairs.

Kath turned around from washing the dishes, "What emergency?" she said.

"Yeah there's no emergency, Dan" Lisa said looking up from her phone.

"But Lauren text that-" I stopped, looked around and realised she's not in the room. I got up and bolted up the stairs ignoring the weird looks I received from my sisters.

I pushed open my room door, "I don't know why you said there was an emergency but I-" I stopped again realising she wasn't in our room either. I checked the bathroom too. No Lauren. On the way down the stairs I was met with Katherine. I stopped and she looked surprised, probably because I don't really talk to her anymore. I talked to all my sisters a little at least but for some reason I just never talked to Kath.

"Hey Kath" I said awkwardly, "Do you know where Lauren is?"

"Uh she just said she was going out" she replied "she didn't say where or when she'd be back"

"Oh okay thanks" I said bluntly, proceeding to walk down the stairs.

"Wait Dani" Katherine said. I had reached the end of the stairs, I turn around and look at Kath expectantly. She came down the stairs and stood in front on me. I honestly didn't know what she was going to do. She looked into my eyes.

"It's good you worry for her, she worries about you too, more than you know" she said. I just looked at the ground.

She lifted my head and engulfed me in a hug. Now I was surprised. The action felt so foreign. But it was good to feel my big sister's warmth again. After a while I hugged back, closing my eyes.

"Yayyyy hugging" Lisa yelled. I laughed into Kath's shoulder as Lisa came from behind and joined the hug. I was in a 'Kathisa' sandwich. Soon enough Chris and Amy were in on the hug, either side of me as well.

"We missed you Dan" I hear Amy whisper.

"I missed you too  and I'm sorry" I said.

I smiled. A real one. That action also felt foreign.

But that hug wasn't complete.

"Lauren's only missing, where is she?" Lisa mumbled against the back of my shoulder.

"I don't know" I whispered.
