Kyle's POV
I sat in the chair next to my mom's bed and watched her as she slept. Every ragged breath she took seemed to cause her discomfort. A silent tear trailed down my face but I was quick to wipe it away before my dad could see. He sat across from me on the other chair and he looked so tired, and I know he hasn't been sleeping. There were bags under his eyes and his once short beard had grown longer. I looked down at my mom once again to find her opening her eyes.
"Hey mom," I said softly.
"Hi Ky," she muttered, attempting a smile.
"How you feeling?" I asked. She looked away for a second and then looked at me again.
"I am just f-fine baby," she forced out. I knew she was lying for my sake but I decided not to take it any further.
"Tell me about you," she said, "When are you gonna bring a girl home to meet me huh?" I felt the blood rush to my cheeks, thinking about Lauren.
"Mom," I said annoyed.
"What?" she asked, as if she didn't know she was embarrassing me, "How about that Lexie or Sofia, they seem nice." I chuckled.
"Well, mom, I'm not exactly Lexie's type-" I started, but she didn't let me finish.
"What do you mean?" she asked incredulously, "You're an amazing, sweet, caring boy."
"No mom, I meant she isn't exactly into boys in general," I said, rolling my eyes at my mom jumping to conclusions. I watch as my mom comes to terms with what I'm trying to say and then her mouth makes a slight oval shape as she says, "Ohhh...", I can't help but let out a small laugh. Out of the corner of my eyes I see my dad smiling too.
"Well that's a shame," she said weakly, " How about your other lovely friend?" I shook my head.
"Sofia is just a friend, she's like a big sister to me." I explained. My mom nodded and then opened her mouth to speak but I cut her off. "Let me guess, next you're going to ask about Becca huh?" I smiled. She frowned.
"No I don't like her, that girl is trouble." she said seriously. I was slightly surprised, my mom hardly ever dislikes someone. I brushed it aside. My mom began coughing violently and my dad rushed to her side. She quickly waved him off.
"I-I'm fine Henry," she said, coughing one last time. Dad didn't say anything, he just smiled sadly and kissed her head before heading out the room. I looked at my mom again.
"I just wanted to know you were with a nice girl before I go," she said, tears brimming her eyes. As she said this I felt tears threatening my eyes too. I just silently nodded my head.
"Listen to me Kyle, When I do go, I need you to look after your dad," she said, I started to get angry all of a sudden.
"No, mom, don't talk like that." I said firmly.
"What? Don't talk about the truth?" she said searching my eyes, I looked at my lap. I felt a warm hand under my chin and my head lifted up to meet my mom again.
"I need you to make sure your father doesn't go off the rails so be there for him, I need you to live a beautiful happy life with a nice girl and have some beautiful grandchildren for me." she smiled. By now I was crying and I just clutched my mom's hand tighter and buried my head in her shoulder.
After a while I'd looked up to see my mom had fallen asleep and so I stood up an ran a hand over my face. I needed to get some air. As I reached the end of the stairs I see my dad sitting on the sofa staring blankly at the TV screen that wasn't even on and the light were turned out.
