••••••• Next morning. . .
The girl didn't know what she was looking at. Three silicone mannequins dressed up in bullet proof suits and helmets. Her eyebrow twitched in confusion as she watched Natasha set them up all in a row facing her.
She had brought Madeline to the roof of the main HQ building, wanting to start testing how far she could use her power. The girl went along with it, but what she had planned was still hanging in the air.
"Alright," the redhead exhaled and stepped next to Maddie with her hands on her hips, "all set."
"Uh--what exactly am I doing again?"
Natasha turned to her, a mischievous smirk plastered on her face. Of all the many times she wore it right before pinning the girl down and her tapping out, Madeline knew to be afraid of that look.
"Hand-to-hand combat is a much needed skill if you really want to know how to defend yourself. With you, however, we can probably throw in a bit of firepower—but only if necessary. So, I want you to go over there to the first one, and take it down using both of what you already know, and what you need to take control. Simple."
"A-Are you sure?"
Madeline looked at her like she was crazy. Maybe she was, maybe this was too dangerous. Peter would definitely be worried for using her abilities like this.
No. No more second guessing.
The girl walked up to the first mannequin and took off her heat-protected gloves. The August chilled wind bit at her skin as she threw them on the ground. She brought up a trembling hand and slowly placed it directly on the vest.
Nothing happened yet and voices taunted her in the back of her head. So, she kept her hand there and tried to harder to push them away.
She huffed out an aggravated sigh, "I can't."
Natasha could tell she was hesitant and spoke up, "Fear is holding you back. You're stronger than what you think. Just don't be afraid anymore. That's how you'll fail if you get put with something that wants to kill you."
Don't be afraid.
You can do this.
Madeline closed her eyes. Now letting the voices come to her. And for the first time in a long time, she let go of hiding and running away from them.
For the first time, she fought back.
First, heat waves radiated off her hand and the vest steamed white smoke. Then, blue flames ignited at her fingertips almost immediately and she gasped at how fast it ignited.
She took her hand off and stepped back to look at her work, the blue flames were something she only saw once in her life and it felt uplifting to see them again.
