•••••••• Avengers HQ, Upstate 5:51pm
Peter played with the base of one of his webslinger bracelets as he and Madeline sat on the rooftop of HQ. His heart was racing so fast, faster than a speeding train.
He didn't know what to say. After what felt like two weeks of her avoiding him and tension hanging in the air, she was here, right beside him.
He's been planning on saying what they could do to make it better all day. But now it slipped his mind and the nerves got to him.
"So, just wondering. . ." The girl suddenly spoke first while looking at the skyline of trees hundred meters away from the building. Peter made the subconscious mistake of looking over at her. He sees her side profile and gets lost at her beauty for a good full 5 seconds before panicking and looking away—pretending to be looking at the skyline also.
"Was the whole thing of interrupting training your idea or Nat's?"
Peter scratched the back of his neck and looked down at his feet. They were dangling off the edge of the building, and so were the Maddie's.
"It was mine. She just helped. And, I mean, I wouldn't necessarily call it interrupting. On the days I'd try to talk to you, you'd be busy with Ms. Romanoff, or talking with Dr. Cho, o-or I don't know. . .It just felt like you were avoiding me all this time so this was the only thing I could think of to get your attention," He motioned toward the Spidey suit he was wearing and Maddie took her gaze away from the scenery and looked to him. He swallowed thickly when he made eye contact. The green pigment in her right eye was brighter than he ever saw due to the sunlight above.
"And to apologize for being. . .me, I guess. I'm sorry for being pushy. That's the last thing you need right now. All of this is just. . a big weird, crazy, mixed-up change that neither of us were really ready for. But I hope you adjusted since then."
Madeline nodded to him, scanning his facial features. Has he ever looked this sleep deprived? The dark circles under his eyes showed through and his complexion looked paler than normal.
But he continued, bringing up one knee up to his chest and hugging it.
"I know you wanted to try to handle it all yourself at first, I get that, but because I found out your Dad and Harry were hunting you down to take the cure away. . .I panicked. I thought Mr. Stark could help us somehow."
Madeline hummed in response. "For better protection."
"Exactly. And. . .I also thought that maybe Mr. Stark could somehow get rid of your powers. I saw that they were hurting you for awhile and I—I made a promise," he confesses.
Madeline tilted her head, seeing him distantly look away at his feet, going in a mental flashback.
"The first day I saw you in the hospital, I swore that I'd protect you from anything that tried to harm you again, even if that includes your abilities. After that, you were in pain for a long time—the nightmares, headaches, all of it—and I didn't know what to do. I didn't want to see you try to control something that wasn't possible to control."
