It only took one more week of staying in HQ until Peter and Aunt May were finally safe to go back to their apartment. One week of Madeline spending New Years with Peter and catching up with Natasha—training with her again like they used to until she too went back to Wakanda. Peter would join them every now and then, yearning to put on the mask. He missed swinging through Manhattan and talk on the News and social media was wondering where Spider-Man went.
He felt awful about everything, having to take a break from Spider-Man for awhile to hide away from Harry's guys. But now that he's been put away, there was nothing to fear anymore. Sure, some of his men might still be running around and causing chaos, but it was just another thing he'll be waiting to take care of himself. The second he got back to Queens, that was the first thing he was going to do. Harry's paid thugs wouldn't stand a chance with his Spidey return.
However, he didn't want to just leave Maddie behind. What if she needed him again. What if the nightmares come back.
He trusted Tony to keep her safe though. He knew she'd be okay living here for awhile until they figure out who her grandparents are and if she's able to stay with them. Maybe then she'd be closer to Queens and be able to go back to school.
They'd be somewhat normal teens again.
January 18th was when the car parked outside HQ with Happy in the driver's seat came to take May and Peter home. The younger Parker's luggage was packed away in the trunk, along with his Spider-Man suit.
He sat on a concrete wall of a planter, legs swinging back and forth. His head was rested on his hand, which his elbow was propped on his leg. The January snow fell lightly and barely an inch blanketed the ground in white.
The boy hugged at his arms, trying to keep the cold out of his dark grey jacket and turned his hoodie up over his head.
Peter kept staring down at his beat up Nike shoes, thinking how much he was going to miss seeing Maddie all the time. He's gotten so used to having her presence around that he wasn't prepared to go without her yet.
"'Ey!" He heard Happy call him from inside of the car. He had the window rolled down and he looked at the boy through the side mirror.
"Stop looking so depressed!"
The corner of Peter's mouth turned down in disappointment as he shook his head lowly toward Happy. "I can't help it," he defended, "and I have every right to be."
Happy sighed, realizing that now was probably not the best time to joke or tease. He brought a finger up to Peter, motioning him on over to the car.
The boy got up and walked with a moping stance. He put his hands in his jacket pockets to keep the cold away.
"Look, I get your sad and everything. But look at it this way, you get to go back home. You miss your friends, don't you?"
