Everything had happened so fast. They had induced me and then my water broke, and before I knew it, it was time to push.
I gripped Kelly's hand, sweat plastering my hair to my forehead. I pushed and pushed and pushed until she was finally here. The sound of a little scream filled the air and I collapsed against the bed.
"Congratulations it's a girl!"
I chuckled with happiness when I saw my little. Her skin had a light blue tint at the moment, but the doctor's had told us that would happen. The doctor let Kelly hold her for a minute or two before taking her away to get checked out.
2 hours Later
My baby girl was finally back. Coming in with her was Dr. Rhodes and Dr. Manning. I was all cleaned up, showered and changed in my hospital room instead of the delivery room. Connor rolled the baby bed over to the edge of the bed. Kelly looked at him hesitantly, clearly wondering if he could hold her.
"You can go ahead and hold her" smiled Rhodes and Kelly carefully picked up our little girl.
"Hey baby girl" he cooed before we both turned to listen to Rhodes.
"So I've looked over her labs and our diagnosis is correct. I'd like to do surgery in about three days, so the morning of the 7th. This gives her a little time to adjust to the world, but we can't wait too long" he explained.
"Okay" I sighed, my voice shaky.
"And you'll be performing the surgery?" asked Kelly, looking up from the baby to face Connor.
"Yes along side Dr. Manning" stated Connor.
"I'll be in there with Rhodes to watch the rest of the baby's organs as we work on her heart" explained Natalie, "I assure you, Rhodes and I are very good at what we do".
"I wouldn't trust anyone else with her heart" I smiled.
"Thank you" Connor grinned back at me, "Does this beautiful little girl have a name?"
"Emberly Shay Severide" I informed him, unable to control the big smile on my face.
He wrote it on the birth certificate before having Kelly and I sign it. We had to sign a few forms of consent for the surgery and everything with our girl. Then Rhodes put all the paper work into his folder, getting ready to leave.
"Oh Connor, I forgot to ask, can we have visitors to meet her?" I asked, hoping we could.
"During visitor hours, yes. But they can only be in your room. When Emberly is in the NICU, only you and Kelly are allowed to visit" Rhodes explained.
"Okay. Thank you".
"Of course. Congratulations".
I looked to Kelly who was sticking his tongue out at Ember. I couldn't help but snap a picture. He was already such a great dad even though he had his doubts.
"Babe, you up for having a few firehouse visitors?" I asked, wanting to get his opinion before inviting them.
"Of course".
I pulled out my phone and dialed our friends. Within twenty minutes Matt and Gabby were here. The others were still on there way.
"Knock Knock" smiled Gabby as her and Matt walked in.
"Hey guys" I smiled, "Come on in".
They walked in both wearing sweet smiles. Kelly was sitting in a comfy armchair next to me, holding Ember again. Gabby crept around to the side of the bed Kelly was on. Her and Matt both gave me a hug before her attention shifted to my little girl.
"How are you feeling?" asked Matt, standing at the end of my bed.
"Good. I got to rest and get cleaned up and change which felt amazing" I chuckled before glancing over at Kelly with Ember, "Besides, it's amazing to watch Kelly with her".
"When he found out about the baby, he would tell me all his doubts about ending up being a crappy father like his own father" began Matt as he pulled on of the empty chairs next to my bed, "I always told him that he would be a great father because he experienced what his father put him through and knows exactly how not to treat his daughter. And look how right I was".
"He'd tell me that sometimes too and as many times as I reassured him, I knew he wouldn't believe it for himself until she was actually here".
A silence fell between Matt and I as we watched Kelly and Gabby gush over the baby.
"What's her name?" asked Gabby, pulling me out of the daze I was in.
I looked at Kelly, unsure if he wanted to tell them or if he wanted me too. He gave me a smile smile before speaking.
"Guys, meet Emberly Shay Severide" he announced with an emotional smile.
Gabby gasped as I watched her wipe a few tears from her eyes, "Shay would've loved that".
"We thought she would" I replied, trying not to cry, "And uh, while were talking about baby things. Kelly and I wanted to ask you guys something".
"Okay".
"Would you guys be Ember's godparents?".
"Of course" replied Matt, giving me a kiss on the side of the head.
"I'd be honored" grinned Gabby before giving me another hug.
"You've come so far since I met you" grinned Matt.
"I couldn't have made it here without you guys" I smiled.
"Agreed" added Kelly.
"So, what happens now that she's here?" asked Matt.
"In the next two days they'll take her into surgery to switch her pulmonary and aorta back to where they're supposed to be. Assuming she makes it through that, she'll be in the NICU for 8 days. Then she'll have to take a certain medication for the rest of her life to help control her blood pressure and make sure her heart is pumping correctly" I explained, having become very knowledgeable on the subject.
"And why do they need to do the switch?"
"Right now she can't get enough breath which is why her skin has a blueish tint to it. It'll go away after her surgery. It also makes her eat poorly" informed Kelly, showing off his knowledge.
"Which means I can't breast feed the regular way because she can't get enough air, so I can only pump" I added.
"Woah. That girl's got a long road ahead of her" stated Gabby.
"Yeah but she's tough. She's a Severide".
