Ponyboy grew up around his older brothers friends his whole life. Constantly, he was told by his mother to leave them be, he was younger than them and he could get hurt, but his father had always though Pony being around Darry and Soda's friends would be good for him. Darry was 16 when he got his lisence to drive, and him being able to drive changed a lot of things in the Curtis household. Soda no longer walked to school, but rode with Darry, however Pony was still in his last year of grade school and had to walk to school everyday while the two ther boys rode in Darry's car to the highschool.Of course the two older boys grew closer on their rides to and from school, and eventually Soda was going out with Darry to hang out with the football players and their girls.
It was a Friday morning in the curtis hosehold, it was also autumn and the leaves hads just began to fall on the roads of Tulsa. It was the time of year for highschool football games and indoor movies, or late dinners at the diner. Pony was sitting at the kitchen table with his parents while Darry yelled from the bottom of the staircase for Soda to hurry up.
"Soda! You are the slowest kid on this planet, I swear!"
"Jeez, Dar Im coming, Im coming."
"Soda if your ass isnt down here in 10 seconds Im leaving without you." Darry continued to grumble as headed into the kitchen to grab a glass of milk and a small bowl of cereal.
"Darrel watch your language." His mother harped at him as she set a fried egg on Mr.Curtis's plate.
"Sorry mom." Darry took down the whole glass of milk in a few hardy gulps. Soda came running down the steps still combing his hair back, and dressed nicer than he normally was.
"Soda what is the big occasion?" Their mother stopped to look at her son.
"Oh well you know, a guy should look nice for the hop on a Friday night"
Mrs. Curtis sighed and gave her sons a stern look. "The Hop, Darry? I thought I told you that you two werent to go anywhere near that plaace after what happend to that Elliot kid."
"Oh come on darling." Mr.Curtis grabbed his wifes arm. "Let them have some fun, they are just teenagers."
Darry and Soda looked at their dad with big eyes and bright smiles.
"I dont want them hooking up with girls and-" Mrs. Curtis leaned into her husband and said quietly, "And drugs. What if they do drugs?"
"Boys will you be doing drugs tonight?"
"No sir!" They responded.
"See, hun, they will be just fine. Just trust them."
"OK. You can go." The brothers became estatic. "On one condition. You have to bring your little brother with you."
"Really?! You really mean it mom? You mean I can really go?!" Pony jumped up from his seat and huggged his mom and his dad; his older brothers began to whine.
"I dont want to take him with me mom, he is going to ruin our look. He is like 11." Soda tried beggins his parents to reconsider.
Pony felt furious that the boy who used to be his bestfriend, his brother, was treating him like this. "Im 12 Soda! Please, I promise I wont ruin anything! Please let me go with you!"
Soda whined a little more only to be shut up by Darry. "Listen kid. You can come with us. But if you mess up anything, and I mean anything, I will not be happy, and you will be dead. You hear?"
"Yes Darry."
"Ok then, we will see you after school. Ill come pick you up. So dont lolly gag around, we have places to be. "
Pony simply nodded his head and watched his olders brother race out of the house once again for another day of school.

Now, Darry hadn't always been the man that we see him as after the death of his parents, in reality The event of his parents death changed him completly as a person, really humbled him out. At school Darry was one of the most popular guys in school, an amazing football player, a handsome guy, smart, charming, all the stuff a person would want to see in a guy like him. Girls threw themselves at him, this was before they really payed much attention to Soda; Soda wsa still pretty young at this point. You could say that Darry was on top of the world as a teenager, a little bit of a king at school. Some people called him a player of some sort.
