As an artist, I have to pay attention to color. I have to pay attention to how the world mixes it's natural shades of orange and red, yellow and blue. Sometimes the most beautiful colors are found in the most unexpected places. Take rocks for example, like the kind you cut open and find the vibrant blue crystals inside. Yed, Soda was like that, like one of those rocks. He changed my world from a dull gray to a vibrant blue, an electric pink and so many other colors that I can't even name.

I sat on the curb and just gazed out into the street. The lot was empty that today, for a change. I can't quite remember what I was thinking of, but it probably had something to do with the color of the grass. It was green but the hot dry summer was forcing it into this crunchy yellow. Then, quite unexpectedly someone tapped my shoulder and sat down next to me. Actually two people sat down next to me. "Two-bit Matthews." The first one said introducing himself then sitting out his hand. I narrowed my eyes and kept to myself staring back out at the street.
"Ok, not social, that's alright. I bet I can make you laugh."
"Yeah good luck with that." I said glancing at him.
"How about this, if I can make you laugh, you come back with us to meet our friends."
"Why would I go with two teenage guys that I don't know, to some house I don't know with more people that I don't know?"
"Because it's hot outside, and your always sitting here doing nothing. What do you got to loose?"
The kid had a point. "Fine. Try me."
He continued to tell me some corny joke that didn't get me the first time but the second time I was cracking up. I followed them into the house and I quickly recegnized the kids. The Curtis brothers. And Dallas Winston. Altogether there was now 9 people in the house including me and the 2 boys from the sidewalk. I bet your wondering who the extra person is, let me get there.
Everyone was standing in the kitchen, Dallas Winston's back was visible to me in the kitchen doorway. They were all sitting down either on the counter or the table and a girl with crazy brown hair and brown eyes was standing up in the middle of their circle talking and using giant hand movements.
Two-bit seemed to walk in and make himself at home while I stood in the kitchen doorway with my head down. As the girl continued to spin so she could see everyone in the group she stopped at me mid-sentence.
"Oh, hi." A smile spread on her face, so I knew immediately that she dug ok. Everyone in the circle turned to glance at me and I could feel their gazes burning into my front like lasers.
"Hi." I said shyly.
"Who's this?" The girl questioned.
"This here is Ollie." Two-bit landed a hand on my shoulder and smiled. "Ollie this is Dallas, Pony, Johnny, Darry, Steve who was with me when I met you, this is D.G" he gestured to the girl and she simply smiled, "and this here is Sodapop." Slowly I looked up to see his eyes. A smirk spread across Sodas face and a mirror image did on mine. I saw blue, green, yellow, purple, and all the other colors of the rainbow. Fireworks went off in my head and my stomach. All I could think was 'wow'.
"Hi." He said smiling at me with pearly white perfect teeth.
"Hi." I too smiled. Neither of us noticed that we were staring and everyone one else in the kitchen was watching us.
That summer was one of the best in my life. My colorful life had recently been going dull but the first time he looked at me, the first time he asked me out and the first time we kissed, my colors exploded. My life was a painting again, and it used all the colors.
