Two-Bits POV

I stood looking at myslef in the mirror. I was racing Soda but why didnt I want to win? Why didnt I want to put grease in my hair like the good old days. Well it was becuase I barley had any hair to grease. They shaved our heads the first day of basic trainning. in the ten weeks we were there a large portion of it had grown back, but it just was still too short for my liking. I wanted long hair, I wanted long nights, I wanted parties and booze and more parties. I wanted to tell jokes upon jokes upon jokes becuase I wasn't sure wheather or not I would come home to do that later. My gitl had bought me a new canister of grease as a coming home gift, I know it wasn't supposed to hurt me, but it did. Just a little. I didn't even want to look at the can. But i felt compelled to run it through my hair. So, that is what I did. I wasn't a wimp, Soda was not going to beat me.
As quick as I could I tried to perfect my tequnice that I hadn't used in a while. I used to end of the comb to make the large swirls and combed grease through the top for a smooth finish. Not perfect but close. It felt good to have on my white t-shirt, my boots, my jeans and my grease. Lastly I grabbed my swtich balde from the nightstand drawer and tried not to think of that horrible night of giving up again.
When I turned around Johnny was standing in the doorway, leaning up against the frame.
"I'm glad you're finally back. I think I forgot how to laugh without you."
"Nah Johnny boy. You can't go being sad when I ain't here. What if I-" I caught myself about to say something about death. "What if I go and disappear tomorrow or somethin'. What would you boys do then?"
"Alright Two-Bit, alright."
"Now come one Johnny I gotta beat Soda."
We raced down the steps an around the corner just to see Soda and the gang already in the kitchen.
Soda looked just like his old self. Baggy jeans, red flannel and loafers. He was laughing a smiling and holding onto my little sister like she was a pricless piece of glass, tight, but delicate. I wanted to rip her away and hold her myself, but I knew they made each other happy. She needed him. Just in case.
Next thing I noticed was that My Girl wasn't there. I guess Dallas knew who I was loooking for, he told me that she had to go home for "Some bogus dinner" as Dally put it.
Pony was looking me up and down. "Wow Two. Feel good to be back in normal clothes?"
"Sure does kid. So what are the plans for tonight?"
"Well I thought we were all just gonna stay in and talk about the last few weeks, you know? Get caught up or somethin'."
We all chuckled a little. "Fine, fine. Well soldier boys, what do you feel up to?" Darry crossed his arms and leaned up against the counter.
Soda started, arms still wrapped around T. "I was thinking that maybe the group of us could go down to-" The phone started to ring. Darry got up with a start but Dallas was already standing next to it and picked it up first. Darry grimmaced at him, and Dally just smirked.
"Curtis residence. Uh huh. Yes of course he is here. Oh well he is a little busy right now." Darry stepped closer to Dallas. Dally put the phone against his chest so the person on the other end couldnt hear. "Its Katherin. She was wondering if Daryl Curtis can talk right now."
"Give me the damn phone." Darry snatched at the phone and took it out of Dallys hands.
"Who's Katherine?" D.G. asked.
All of us guys sighed. Soda started to explain. "Katherin is this girl that Darry went out with in high school."
"Super hot. Blonde hair, nice body." Steve added.
"We think that since, well, with the situation and all this is how he is handling his stress." Johnny explained.
Darry hung up the phone and rejoined our conversation. "So you guys make some plans. Be back by curfew. I'm going to have Katherine over for the evening so all of you need to be out. We can reminise on memories and everything later once everyone gets back."
Dallas spoke up this time. "I know just how to celebrate this little homecoming. Everyone, get in the cars, we are staring out at Buck's!" AS we all grabbed jackets and car keys Darry continued to lecture us on making good choices.
Soon enough I was driving my own car again with Steve in the passenger seat and Pony and Johnny in the back. Soda and T.C. rode in Darrys truck and finally Dallas an D.G rode in Dallas's T-Bird. Bucks wasn't too far away, we liked to take the old country dirt roads there. We stopped the "drag spot" which was really just a stop sign at an old abandoned intersection. It's where all drag races were started around here. Mine and Soda's cars were lined up with Dally behind us. He didn't like racing in his T-Bird "She is too pretty for a scratch"
Soda reved his engine a few times and rolled down his window. "You up for a little wager?" He yelled to me through the cars. I could barley hear him over his radio that was turned up as loud as possible.
"What were you thinking?"
"Well if I win, you buy Steve and I beer, and no one tells Darry." Steve celevrated next to me, suddenly hoping Sodas car would win.
"Well what if I win?"
"The gang will leave you and your girl alone for the rest o the night as soon as she catches up with us." That sounded like a pretty sweet deal. I hadn't been able to see her much all day, and it would be nice to just be able to pay attention to her.
I looked over at Steve and back at Soda. "If I win, I want T to stay with Steve for the rest of the night so I know nothing will happen."
"Alright Two, alright. Deal then?"
"Deal Soda"
We had Dallas be our official, he waited at the "finish line", which was really just a line up shrubs in the yard next to the road about a half mile down the road. D.G stood at the starting line to count us off.
"Ready , Steady, Go!"
And we were off. Soda had a large start on me, and for most of the race I thought I was going to lose by a lot. That was until Soda hit a pot hole.
