Chapter 21
●●●
Jimin was a lot younger. A couple centuries younger, when he had his first contact with humans. His parents always made sure he wouldn't encounter any in his early days, because humans were not respected by sirens. They were seen as filthy and despicable creatures. But who could blame them when most humans sirens encountered were drunken sailors or pirates, rapists and other filth?
So when he first met them while he was exploring the sea, he was taken aback yet intrigued. They were different from his kind. An imperfect version of them that was living in cities instead of underwater. They were a lot less brave. Never entering the sea without wood to keep them save or they at least stayed within 100 meters in reach of land.
Human cities. Jimin always was impressed by the constructions human produced. Places to live in. Beautiful churches where they prayed to their gods. Market places. A system Jimin never did quite grasp. Why ask for anything in exchange when you gave someone something? Humans had a really self-centered way of thinking, but even that was impressive in Jimin's eyes.
He tried fitting in for some time. Wearing the same clothing. Speaking the same language. He even made some friends. But he also heard stories of how two-faced creatures sirens were. Some even used those tales as material for horror-stories. Once he heard the story of an old sailor about how he had once come face to face with a siren and how its face had turned from beautiful into one of the most grotesque grimaces he had ever seen and Jimin had to hold back a huff.
Sirens didn't change their appearance in front of humans. They stuck to what they chose and neither did they let go of their prey so this man was a liar. Liars. Another thing new to Jimin. Sirens didn't lie. They hardly had any contact to others of their kind and they didn't have a reason to.
They didn't 'speak'. Instead they sang to each other, communicating their emotions with their voice. There was no such a thing as lying.
But humans were different. They lied all the time. Something Jimin unconsciously picked up, which he wasn't proud of, but it made things easier.
Maybe that's why when Jimin came back he felt different. He still felt a certain connection to his brother and the other sirens, but it was different from before. A certain interest in humanity was born within him. Something that probably was one of the reasons for his brother disappearing into thin air.
That was exactly where Jimin was sitting now. The place he had seen him the last time, before he ran off. A stone similar to the one he always sat on with Yoongi. The only difference being the dark aura surrounding him. This was not a place of peace and quiet.
This was a place of destruction and death. Many had died here. Some on their own. Some thanks to Jimin's help. And even through all of that... Jimin liked this place. He had spent most of his life exploring the small island, watching the fog that always seemed to build up around it gather, before dispersing into nothing again.
There was a certain kind of atmosphere around here. One that promised misery. But all of that didn't mean that the island didn't see some beautiful moments as well. Just as much as the island fought off humans trying to settle down on it, it seemed to draw in animals of all kinds.
Jimin loved singing to the animals. His voice attracted them. They gathered around him and watched him, sometimes for hours. Some were dangerous but they never attacked him or the other animals around them. Their encounters were peaceful and accepting.
Over time Jimin realized had that he could easily manipulate the behavior of the animals around him.
By changing his tone or way of singing he could make the animals uneasy, anxious and even make them panic.
Saying Jimin didn't use that against humans would have been a kind lie, but that wasn't the way it was. At a certain point in time something happened that made Jimin, who had once been oh so patient with human kind, despise them.
He wasn't stupid. He knew that not all of them were bad. But how would he know who had bad intentions and who didn't?
And no, in this whole story... Jimin never was the good guy. He wasn't delusional enough to convince himself he was. He wasn't cleansing the world from all its filth. He wasn't a hero who saved those who would have fallen victim to those bad guys. In this story he was one of the bad guys himself. He sometimes killed out of pure pettiness, or simply because he loved the fear in the eyes of those who deserved to die.
That's what his past looked like and honestly, nothing much changed. He still was the bad guy some would mistake for a good guy because well he was great at blending in, but he was okay with that.
Leaning back on the stone he sighed. The only thing he really hoped for was that Yoongi wouldn't push him away once he found out what kind of monster he actually was. After all, that monster was willing to do anything to make Yoongi happy.
Maybe for once he could do something that had nothing to do with his 'monster' side. Maybe just for once he could be the 'good' guy at least to one person...
