~ Chapter 8 | Thursday, June 13th ~
I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON so I don't know why I agreed to going into work to help with the stock team. I woke up at 7 in the morning and I didn't go to sleep til 5 so I was not going to survive that shift unless I stopped at my favorite coffee place. I was not one of those people who obsessed over coffee and tried so hard to be relatable and shit. I only drank coffee when I got no sleep and needed a quick pick me up before I started my day.
I walked into the sweltering coffee shop and smiled as I took a deep whiff of the smell. I could smell all the different scents of coffee along with the smell of chocolate chip cookies and brownies. I walked up and waited in the line as I stared at the red walls that were covered with black and white photos with a bit of history underneath.
I was trying my best to be cool because the girl behind the register, was a girl that I saw quite often. I glanced over at her and she met my eye. She gave me a cute little smile and then quickly looked back at her customer. I was next in the line so I had to think of something quick to make her laugh.
"Alright, you're order will be with you in one moment. Next customer!"
I walked up to the counter and smiled. "Good morning, Saya."
"The usual?"
I smiled and nodded. "Yeah."
"So, what's your name today?"
I chuckled.
Something I did when I went to coffee shops, specifically that one, was that I would use different names when I came in there. One day I would be Jamal, next day I would be Steve and that day I was, "Yeger."
"Yeger? That's a new one." She smiled as she placed a piece of black hair behind her ear.
"So, how are you today?"
"I'm good. How about you?"
"I'm doing good. I wish we could talk longer." She bit her bottom lip and then looked away from me. "What time you get off work today?"
"Aye, stop flirting and move around! Some of us actually have places to be lover boy!"
"I-I'm sorry. It's pretty busy and I don't want the customers to rip my eyeballs out."
I laughed. "Don't worry. You got me and if any of those mofos try to touch those beautiful eyes, I'll kick them in their shit."
She was laughing and that was enough for me to step aside. Her smile was unwavering and her cheeks were burning red. She was so pretty and if I had a dream girl, it would have been her. It was easy for me to ask most girls out but just like Ashley, she was a tough nut to crack. I had to just keep coming and keep trying until she finally let me in. For the meantime, I just had to suffice with my blind date thing with Ashley and hope that one of those girls were enough.
"Yeger!" A man called out.
I walked over to the counter and grabbed my drink that had a heart on it. I looked up at the guy and he smirked.
"The heart wasn't from me. It was a special request." He hinted me with his eyebrows and his titled head but I already knew the heart was from Saya; I wasn't stupid.
"Thanks man," I grabbed my coffee and bag of cookies.
"Kabelo!"
I turned around and crashed into a man who ran into me. My top popped off and my coffee went all over the place. I thought I had a good grip on it but when I looked down, my cup was on the ground and so was that guy.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry," he said as he sat the cup up to stop the rest of the drink from spilling. He then quickly went to the counter and grabbed a bunch of napkins and started to clean it all up by wiping side to side with the thin napkins that became soggy in the matter of a second.
I grabbed a bunch more napkins and squatted down to help him. "Bro, wiping like that isn't doing anything. Just sit the napkins on top of it like this." I dropped a bunch of napkins of the mess. "Now, wipe." I wiped and cleaned up a good amount of it. He looked up at me and pushed up his glasses with a nervous smile.
"I'm sorry."
"No, it's fine dude. I'm just glad that you decided to help me."
We finished cleaning up the mess together. We bumped heads when we crouched down and our arms gently brushed against each others as we wiped the floor together. I noticed he tried his best not to look at me and if his skin wasn't so brown then I bet he would be redder than a tomato. I thought it was...cute? Adorable? I didn't know the correct word to describe it but he gave me a warm feeling in my chest and I couldn't help but smile.
"That's the last of it. Thanks again."
He pulled out a bunch of dollars from his pocket and a few twenty-dollar bills fell to the ground. "Here take this." He forced a bunch of crumpled up dollar bills my way and I took them as he went down to pick up all the money he dropped.
"I'm good. Thank you though."
He stood up and I gave him his money back.
"Yeger!" Saya called out.
I turned around and there she was holding a cup of coffee. I walked up to her and grabbed it. "Thank you."
"It's on the house. I'll see you around?"
"Y-Yeah."
Kabelo grabbed his cup and looked over at me with a small smile as I was sipping my coffee and I gave him one back. As I watched him make his way to the door, I thought about how much Ashley would've liked someone like him.
He was a nice guy, dark skinned and attractive, which was her type so I thought that I should get to know him a bit first to make sure he was legit.
So I said my final goodbyes and quickly made my way outside. Before he could get into his car, I ran up to him and he looked back at me.
"Hey, would you like to exchange numbers?"
He looked down and smiled. "I would love too."
