This morning when I woke up, I reached for Evan but the other side of the bed was empty. Cold. Worried that he already left for work, I grab my glasses and wrap my naked body in Evan's favorite quilt.
I tip toe down the endless maze of hallways and into the kitchen/living room. I stop when I see fully dressed Evan sitting on the back porch, looking out onto the valley with Chase laying down at his feet.
Sliding the door open, I step out onto the patio/porch. Evan casually turns and smiles up at me.
"Hi." I blush.
"Hi back." He smiles distantly.
Evan motions for me to come sit down on his lap. I do so while holding onto that quilt for dear life. The cool, windy air sends chills down my back. I wrap one arm around his shoulders and the other holds onto the quilt.
"Why are you out here all alone?" I say worriedly.
"I didn't want to wake you." He doesn't look at me, just the dark clouds ahead. "I made it rough on you last night."
I smile at my thoughts. Oh how deliciously satisfying our night was! My core still aches from what Evan did to me.
"You don't look happy." I say softly, "Did I do something wrong?"
Evan quickly looks to me then, his stoic face is now a worried and very concerned expression. His hand holds my waist closer to him.
"No, Sweetheart, you've done absolutely NOTHING wrong." Evan says in a softer voice, his deep voice getting deeper. "I'm just expecting a call."
"Oh," I fiddle with his shirt collar "what can I do to make you happier?"
He kisses my bare shoulder. "You being here makes me happy, sweetheart."
I decide to at least try and do something. My hand lightly moves up Evan's chest and holds the side of his neck. My lips brush against his cheek, his beard tickling my lips. He turns and kisses the corner of my mouth. His arm pulls me into him and he wraps both arms tightly around me. He goes back to the dark clouds.
"It's going to rain soon." Evan says distantly, "It's already getting colder out. You're shivering."
I actually am shivering cause it's freaking cold outside! And here I am with nothing but a pathetic quilt to cover me up. I stand and walk back inside, leaving Evan to himself.
Thank God I packed a hoodie and leggings plus fuzzy socks. After I put my hair up in my favorite scrunchie, I walk through the house. The sound of the back porch/patio door slams shut. Chase barks as he runs through the house happily. I pet him when he nearly tramples me on his way through.
As I walk through the entry way of the house, the front door opens and Drew steps inside. He waves to me and smiles.
"Hey Brooke!" Drew gives me a warm hug, "Where's Evan?"
"Kitchen, I think?" My phone buzzes in my front hoodie pocket.
Drew walks himself to the kitchen/living room as I take the call.
                      "Hello?" I say
"Brooke, you need to get down here ASAP!" The urgency in Lucy's voice scares me, "Renee is in the hospital!"
In the background, I hear somebody groaning. Renee. My heart beats faster and I rush into the kitchen to grab my keys. Wait—SHIT! My car is at home. Evan drove me here. Shit!
"Hold on, okay? What happened?" I say seriously, trying to remain calm. "Have you got a hold of Brenton yet?"
"No, he's not answering yet but I am still trying to call him." Lucy sounds like she's panicking. And she's a first grade teacher. "Renee was riding her bike when the wheels got loose and flipped her over into a ditch. She could barely get out of the ditch by herself."
"Holy shit!" My feet stop, my hand over my mouth. "I'm on my way, okay? You're at St. Lauren's, right?"
Frantically, I look for Evan's car keys. He has three cars (yeah, I know); a custom car his best friend built for him himself when he finally got rich by ripping people off at his company, his black Sedan, or his bright orange Mustang. As I search for the Sedan keys, a firm hand grabs my shaking hand. When I look up, Evan is staring down at me worriedly. I drop my phone, it falls to the ground and I don't even think about picking it up.
"Where the keys to the Sedan?" I am on the verge of tears, Renee is hurt. "Renee is in the hospital. Bad bike crash, she ended up in a big ditch and could barely even call Lou for help."
Rarely do I ever mention my friends to Evan, mainly because he never has time to meet them because he's either screwing me or screwing with his father (NOT THE SEXUAL WAY PERVS!!!!). But Evan's eyes immediately go soft and he reaches inside his Mickey Mouse hoodie pocket, revealing the Sedan's keys. I quickly kiss him and grab the keys, running out into the garage. Chase tries to chase me but I am too quick for him. I slam the door in his face and I don't think twice about it. I hop into the car and quickly jet out of there.
I drive to St. Lauren hospital and call Lucy immediately. She answers on second ring.
"Lou, where the hell are you?" I exclaim.
"In the emergency room, Renee is being so difficult!" She exclaims, not as worried as she once was. "Are you here?"
"Ugh, yeah?" I say annoyed, "Come get me, I am in the waiting room."
