it's been a while hasn't it?third person limited following (y/n)
for a few years after high school, it seemed like Yūki and Yuri were going strong. the tattoo on her arm didn't fade or disappear; so that's what she assumed.
but one day, after her evening shower, (y/n) found that the tattoo looked like it had washed away in the water. it was still there, but the colours were dull and it looked like a temporary tattoo and how it washes off.
what's up with Yūki? she thought. are things with Yuri not going well?
the number of things on her wrist had increased slightly over the years. now, accompanied by a slice of cake and a golden retriever. but the one of Yuri seemed to be fading away.
and as days passed, the colours got more dull and there were patches of it missing. every time she showered, it looked like the tattoo was washing off, even when it shouldn't be. the tattoos lasted for as long as the person loved that thing.
so was Yūki falling out of love with Yuri?
Yūki, Yuri and (y/n) all went to the same university. it wasn't too-too far away from Seidou, and sometimes (y/n) went back to visit her favourite teachers or to see how her old club was doing. she said hello to the baseball coach, Kataoka, who was still kicking.
she couldn't fathom what was wrong with Yūki and Yuri in the slightest. she saw them on campus from time to time. in the cafeteria or on her way out. they seemed happy. i mean, Yūki still had his blank face and stare, but he looked relatively happy to (y/n). so what was going on?
until one evening, after her shower, (y/n) saw that the tattoo of Yuri was gone completely. as if it had been picked away just like a temporary tattoo. there was an empty space where it had been, and a barely, barely visible outline of the once permanent tattoo.
(y/n) needed to talk to Yūki. and soon. or else her new restless mind would never slow down.
***
the next Friday, (y/n) approached Yūki after evening classes. he was by himself. he's been practically by himself for a week now. yeah, Jun, Masuko or Ryōsuke were there sometimes; and other times Tanba, Chris or Miyauchi were with him for a bit. but he had mostly been by himself.
along with the tattoo of Yuri, the tattoo of the slice of cake had gone, but the dog was still there. perhaps when the relationship ended he kept the dog? or he still loved it even though Yuri had taken it.
(y/n) sat across from Yūki at the picnic table he was at. "hey," she said quietly. she didn't really know what to say at this point.
"hey," he said glumly. "why brings you by?"
"oh, not much," she told him. "why is the tattoo of Yuri not on my wrist anymore? did you two break up?" stuff like this could be a sensitive topic, but (y/n) had to get to the point or else Yūki most likely wouldn't spill.
"yeah," he whispered. "i assumed she was cheating on me. she was; with her actual soulmate. so i can't be too mad."
"i'm sorry, Yūki," (y/n) said softly. "you shouldn't have had to go through that."
"i'm sorry, (y/n). i should have broken up with Yuri back in high school when i found out she wasn't my soulmate. i set myself up for heartbreak."
the Yūki (y/n) knew in high school probably never would have been this vocal about his feelings. but, people change.
"say, Yūki?" she asked. he looked at her curiously. "how 'bout we go on a date? you know, first date kinda thing with your soulmate. when are you free?"
"you know, that sounds good, (y/n). i'm free tomorrow after four-thirty. is that fine?"
"that's perfect, Yūki. just perfect."
maybe she could never fill in the shoes Yuri left empty, but she could damn well try. after all, she is Yūki's soulmate.
