i just love him :)

third person limited following Okumura

ever since the betrayal of his junior high baseball coach, Okumura has taken everything seriously. every baseball game, competition and gym class, he has strived to win. even when winning wasn't an option for his team.

and he's been okay with that. he hasn't cared for anyone who thought he was crazy. he had Taku, and that's all he needed, right?

wrong.

when Taku was sorted into a different class in high school, Okumura was a little bummed. he didn't have his best friend with him, but he would find a way to survive his first year of high school.

it was the third week in and their gym class had begun to be outside and not in the gym. the class had done a vote, and Okumura was pleased to know that they were playing baseball.

so of course, he was a team captain, and Asada- bless his anxious soul- was the other. Asada got first pick and so they chose their teams.

and (y/n) was the last one there. she was on Okumura's team.

no one wanted to be pitcher, so it was decided that (y/n), the most athletic girl in the class, would be the pitcher. plus, she had mentioned she played baseball when she was younger.

out of the whole class, only the catcher and pitcher had a baseball glove. the rest of the class had to either use their hat or strictly their hands. Okumura was glad the teacher let him hurry to his dorm to grab his glove.

before the game begun, Okumura, who had not been granted catcher gear, made his way to the mound to talk to (y/n).

"how good of a pitcher are you?" he asked, holding his glove to his mouth.

"Okumura, you do know that this is just gym class, right? you don't have to hold the glove to your face and you don't really have to worry about my pitching. i'll be throwing underhand," she told him. his back straightened up almost as if he was on defense.

"we're playing to win, (y/n). if you can pitch properly, tell me and we'll do it." he did take the glove from his face.

"when i said i played baseball when i was younger, i meant i stopped when i was ten and even then i played shortstop. i've never pitched before in my life- at least not in a game, even one like this- so i'm going to throw underhand. i know you're on the baseball team, but you don't have to take this game seriously. just relax and have some fun." she took a deep breath and smiled at him brightly. "and keep your throws to our teammates light, yeah? some don't even have a hat to use as a glove. also, you stand way to close to the pitcher when you're on the mound. just take a step back, jeez."

Okumura was stunned to say the least. he could understand the part about his throws and he could understand the part about standing too close- Sawamura had already told him that- but he just didn't get the whole 'relax and have fun' bit.

maybe it was because he only played baseball competitively and couldn't relax when playing. or maybe he just couldn't have fun when he was seriously trying to win. either way, he just nodded to (y/n) and started the game trying to have some fun.

and it sorta worked.

once he let up on his serious intent to win, the game was fun. of course, some people were better than others, but everyone was trying to win. (y/n) was actually really good at batting, and safely got home every time she was up to bat.

Asada pitched underhand as well, and caught multiple balls that went straight to him and his hat.

Okumura himself hit the ball like there was no tomorrow, and followed suit behind (y/n) and got home safely everytime.

the whole class was laughing by the end as they packed up the bats and whatnot and headed in to the changerooms.

(y/n) gave Okumura a slap on the back as she walked by him, giving him a knowing smile before entering the girls changeroom.

was it that obvious that he really enjoyed the game? he truly did. he had a lot of fun batting and even catching (y/n)'s crappy pitching made him smile. it was the first time in a while where he played a game and not had a strong desire to win.

perhaps he should hang around (y/n) a bit more. purely for experimentation. because she made him way too happy when she was pitching to him for his own good. and now that he thought about it, seeing her smiling and seeing her happy made him happy.

maybe he was coming down with something.
