Chapter 26

When you hear certain words that come out of the mouth of person you love, the level of pain laced with each word could make you speechless sometimes.

That was how Laura felt when she heard those words from Greg.

Speechless.

This wasn't her Greg, something was definitely not right. Everything about this was wrong. The way he was looking at her, dry and empty, like he didn't know who she was. The way he just spoke to her. The things he said!

"Oh darling, you're awake again." Samantha's voice rang out in the room as she came in.

Laura watched in confusion as Samantha sashayed towards him.

He attempted a hesitant smile which came out weak and she bent down and kissed his lips.

She just stood immobile. Unable to react and didn't even know how to react, if she wanted to.

Samantha started whispering something to him and the intimate picture they displayed became too much for her and she turned away.

Not bothering to look back at them or utter another word, she rushed out of the room trying hard not to let the tears spill down her cheeks.

She almost rushed past a confused Freda who took hold of her hand and whirled her around.

"Laura!" She almost shouted, releasing her hand, panic filling her eyes. "What happened? Is my brother okay?"

Laura nodded unable to speak and still fighting the urge to release tears.

Freda sighed in relief. "Then why were you rushing out like that?" She assessed Laura's face. "Are you alright?"

Laura nodded. "Yes, yes, I'm fine." She replied. "I have to go, take care of your brother."
She didn't wait to hear Freda's response and dashed out of the hospital aware of Freda's confused eyes on her.

She hopped into the car and drove away. Not leaving her pain behind.

"... And that was exactly what happened yesterday and how it had happened." Laura ended with a rueful smile and a sad look washed over Lizzy's beautiful face. Then she frowned.

"But why would Greg pretend to have forgotten who you are?" She stated slowly and thoughtfully. "What does he aim to achieve? It just doesn't make sense."

"I have been wondering why he acted the way he acted yesterday." Laura whispered. "He didn't recognize me! But did Samantha and even called her his...his fiancee!" She wailed and another episode of crying followed.

"We ought to find out why he acted the way he did, yesterday." Lizzy said after Laura had sobered.

"You think it's not ordinary right?" Laura asked hopefully and Lizzy nodded. "I think so too. Something is not just right."

"And we ought to get to the bottom of it."

In a few hours, they found themselves matching into Greg's ward. They were going to find out why he had acted the way he had the previous day.

Laura gently opened the door and found an unfamiliar face in the room. It was a young handsome man around Greg's age, obviously a friend or relative to Greg. They were both talking quietly when Laura came in with Lizzy then their conversation halted immediately and they both turned to face them.

Laura noticed that the other man's eyes widened in surprise and recognition for a sec before he quickly masked it again.

She glanced over at Greg and still saw that empty look when he beheld her in his eyes.
