Laura looked at Dexter with a small loving smile as he waited for an answer, though her mind was muddled and her heart was beating erratically.
She sighed.
She was tired. Tired of fighting for a lost cause. Who was she deceiving? Greg was lost to her forever. She could never get him back. She didn't even know whether she still wanted him after everything he had done to her. She had been patient. For over a year she had been hoping he would one day come to remember her for who she really was and what she had once meant to him. But all proved abortive and the worst of it all was the sack letter she had received from him after a night of intense lovemaking and worse still, the second dreaded letter that tore at her heart whenever she thought of it.
The accident had reborn him into a beast.
Anger at him beclouded her heart and she discovered there was no soft spot for him in her heart any longer.
He was her son's father, yes. But that was all he would ever be to her.
And he would never know that Cameron was his.At this point she should move on with her life. Dexter had helped her realize that. And what better person would it be to spend the rest of her life with, if not Dexter?
Greg might always hold a part of her heart but even that part had to be buried and covered forever.
Taking a deep breath, she held out her fingers towards Dexter so he could fix in the ring.
A smile of relief cleared out the lines of worry and nervousness on Dexter's face and he gently took her fingers but was sharply halted by the sound of a strong male voice.
"Laura!"
Laura's head snapped up at the sound of that voice that she could recognize anywhere.
Surprise and confusion were etched on her face as she quickly got up."Greg..." She called softly, then shook her head as she remembered his treatment of her and her final resolve. "What are you doing here, sir?" She asked curtly.
He seemed taken aback for a moment.
Greg looked at her with sad and frustrated eyes. How could he begin to tell her that he had just gotten back memories of his past life? Where would he begin?
He wondered why those damned memories had decided to come crashing down on him at this time? What happened all these while?
But then he realized that it was the scene earlier on before his intrusion that had triggered his memory.
The sight of another man close to his woman with the intention of making her his forever had tore at his brain and the fear of losing his most treasured treasure had pulled hard, that trigger to regaining his memory.
"Laura you need to calm down and hear me out." He began gently.
"I do not want to hear anything that comes out of your mouth Mr Williams." She snapped. "You're intruding in our privacy and I demand that you leave."
What had happened to her? This wasn't his Laura. Had a lot changed over the months? Including her affection for him?
"Angel you need to listen to me..."
"Mr Williams I want you to leave my house this minute." She cut him off coldly.
He stilled, then took a deep breath. "At least tell me why you resigned from your work."
She shook her head in surprise and irritation.
"Really Mr Williams? Have you resorted to being a liar?"He frowned.
"What are you talking about?""You are a bastard Greg, I hate you! Get out!" Tears began to feel her eyes over the love hate she felt towards the man opposite her.
"Didn't you hear her?" Dexter chopper in. "Leave."
Greg turned to him, a scowl darkening his face. "And who the hell are you to talk to me like that?"
"My fiance!" She said strongly.
Then suddenly she gave her fingers to Dexter and looked at him expectantly.
He was obviously confused but he quickly recovered as he understood what she wanted and with a smile, he slid the ring onto her finger. She turned to Greg and flashed the ring on his face. "See, we'll be getting married anytime soon and my fiance doesn't like to share. So I suggest you stay away from me Mr Williams because I am engaged."
He scowled deeply.
"The hell you are." He uttered savagely. She looked at him, her love for him rearing out it's head again and anger beclouding and suppressing that love.
"What is it to you, anyway?" She asked coldly. "You made your point clear and I'm acting on that so what is your problem!?""I remember everything!" He exclaimed and everyone stilled. Not a sound was heard apart from their breathing.
Laura froze at his words, shock coursing through her veins.
She locked eyes with him, reading him and her eyes widened.
"W-what are you talking about?" She asked shakily.
"I remember you, carrot." He said softly.
She gasped and almost fell with shaky legs and Greg made to catch her but Dexter caught her and held her in his arms while Greg scowled deeply at his arms around her.
She was speechless.
"Look what you've done!" Dexter gritted. "You need to leave now."
"Get your hands off her!" Greg took a menacing step forward but Laura pulled herself upright.
"No!" She halted his movement. "Do not come any closer, Greg."
Greg looked at her with a sad and confused expression and that look broke her heart but she owed a huge part of her revival after Greg's accident, to Dexter.
He had always been there for her. She couldn't disappoint him now.
Greg would disappoint her again and she was tired of drama."I'm sorry Greg," she said softly but firmly. "It's too late."
He frowned deeply. "What do you mean it's too late?"
"It might not be fair to you but you have to move on," She said. "Without me."
"Carrot," he said softly, his voice breaking slightly. "You can't do that to me. I love and need you. I always have and always will, you can't do that to me!"
"But I have to and I will!"
"The hell will I let you get married to another man!" He stated harshly.
With a scowl at Dexter who stood his ground, he turned to face her again.
"I do not know why you're saying these things, but you are mine Laura and nobody can change that...""Now listen here Williams," Dexter interrupted. "She is nobody's property and..."
"And you dare not open your mouth at me like that again or you will regret it." He snapped angrily and swore that the other man flinched at his words.
"Greg!" She came in. "You have said enough. That's my fiance you're talking to like that."
"Carrot..."
"Greg, please leave," She interrupted. "Just go, I'm tired of getting hurt."
"Laura..."
She raised her hand to silence him and he stared at her in surprise for a long period.
Then he took a deep breath.
"I'll leave. But I'm definitely coming back."With one last angry scowl at Dexter, he turned and left the house, slamming the door in his wake.
Laura flopped down on the sofa, burying her face in her hands.
