Steve's POV
I paced outside of the lab in worry. I hoped the girl wouldn't wake up without me there. I promised her I wouldn't leave her, that I'd stay.
"Steeeveeeee!" I heard her cry followed by a crash and I ran into the lab. She sat up on the lab table and held a scalpel in her hand pointing it towards Bruce and Helen. When she sat me, she dropped the instrument and tried to run to me, but her legs were so weak, she immediately fell. I scooped her off the floor as she started to cry in my neck, sobs wracking her body.
"I'm right here, don't cry. I'm here." I mumbled into her ear. I looked to Bruce and Dr. Cho, hoping they had good news.
"She's okay for the most part. There's more emotional damage than physical." He clarified.
"And her memory?"
"The jury's still out on that one Captain. It could come back, but there's a larger chance that it won't." Dr. Cho replied.
I expressed my thanks before leaving the lab. The girl wrapped her arms tightly around my neck. On my way to my room in the tower, we passed Tony.
"Hey there Capsicle. How's your daughter? He teased.
"She's not my daughter Stark." I sighed. Honestly at this point, there's no way Tony's words could get to me. Pepper gasped when she saw the girl.
"Steve, who is this?" She smiled.
"We don't know. She doesn't remember her name." I shrugged. Pepper attempted to put a hand on the girl's back which she cowered away from, pushing her gram further into mine.
"Steve." The girl whined. Pepper moved her hand away quickly.
"I'm sorry. She's still a bit tense towards others." I apologized.
"That's fine. Is this all she's wearing?"
"Yeah." Pepper looked over at Tony.
"I'm getting her some clothes and I'm putting them on the company card." She turned her attention back to me. "How old is she Steve?"
"She's about 13." I replied. Pepper typed something into her tablet and smiled.
"She should get the clothes by this afternoon, compliments of Tony Stark." Pepper walked away and Tony sighed.
"I'm always outnumbered in my own damn tower." He mumbled following in her direction. I chuckled and looked the girl in her eyes.
"I think you're gonna stay here with us. You like that?" I asked softly.
"Stay...with you?" She pondered. I nodded and a ghost of a smile tugged on her lips.
"Good. You'll stay with me and Bucky on our floor so I can keep an eye on you." I smiled. I carried her to my floor and opened the guest room. The room itself was huge but Bucky and I kept it simple. There was one bed, a wardrobe and night stand. There were three windows with about 2 feet of space between them letting in light. The bathroom was tucked away in the corner. It wasn't obnoxiously big, but rather homey.
"You can stay here or with me and Bucky in our room." I offered. She shrugged and
yawned again."Are you still tired?" I asked. She nodded and shifted in my arms. I laid her on the bed and smiled. She turned and cuddled into the pillow.
"You're quite the hugger." I stated in amusement. Her facial expression showed she had fallen into deep thought based on the lines on her forehead.
"I like hugs...I think." She muttered.
"Bucky likes hugs too. Every night before we go to sleep, I give Bucky a big hug. You can join our little routine too." I explained. The girl nodded, showing understanding. I slowly reached out to her and rubbed her back comfortingly.
"You're gonna be okay here. We're gonna take care of you until you get your memories back and if you never do, we'll make new memories with you. I promise, you'll be well taken care of." I vowed. She looked at me with hopeful eyes before sleep finally took her. I turned to exit the room but was blocked by Bucky leaning against the door frame.
"Don't leave her alone. She has bad nightmares. Worse than mine." He explained.
"How do you know?"
"I watched her sometimes when we were at the same base. She'd toss and turn while screaming and crying for help." I sighed and looked back at the sleeping girl.
"I'll just sit outside the door." I decided.
The Girl's POV
"Lyric Roy...only child of James Roy, the scientist. He has what we need to enhance abilities using the tesseract." One man said to another.
"Keep the girl alive. Kill the wife in order to get Dr. Roy to comply. Hail Hydra." The other man said. The first man nodded and ran off. I stood watching the two men, holding a bear in my hand. The second man gave me a sinister smile and stooped down to my level. He had a close shaved head and one round glass over one eye. Kind of like glasses.
"Hello little one. My name is Wolfgang Von Strucker." He introduced.
"I'm Lyric." I replied shyly.
"Yes you are," the man smiled at me, eyeing me from head to toe. "I think we're going to good friends Lyric."
I woke up feeling cold, very cold. Lyric...she is me. I am Lyric
"Steve! Steve!" I cried. He ran in with a man I hadn't met yet trailing behind him.
"What is it? Bad dream?" Steve asked.
"Memory." I panted.
"You had a memory?" I nodded my head.
"What was it about?"
"Me...my name."
"What is it?" The man asked.
"Lyric Roy."
