Lyric's POV
I woke up cuddled between Steve and Bucky. It was warm between the two of them. I turned to Bucky and nestled my head into his neck, a comfort that was foreign to me. I could get used to it though.
"Hey doll, you up?" He mumbled sleepily. I nodded softly, my fingers tracing the star on his metal arm. The metal was cold against my finger.
"You need anything? Breakfast, a shower, brush your teeth?" Bucky yawned.
"Brush." I whispered. He sat up with me on his lap.
"Come on, I'll help you." He sniffled. Bucky carried me to the bathroom and sat me on the counter.
"I think Steve keeps extra toothbrushes in the drawer." He mumbled to himself. I watched as he produced a purple brush.
"It's a good thing you woke me up or else I would've stayed in bed all day." Bucky chuckled. I put the minty toothpaste on my brush and passed the paste to Bucky so he could do the same. We brushed in silence, occasionally looking at each other in the mirror. The only noises came from the toothbrush bristles cleaning our teeth. That silence was broken upon Steve's entrance.
"Mornin darlin, Mornin Buck." Steve yawned.
"Morning." Bucky and I said. Steve kissed my forehead and patted Bucky on the back. I don't even think he realized that he did it.
"Come on doll, we've gotta get some food in ya." Bucky said leading me to the kitchen.
When we got to the kitchen, Pietro and Sam stood there drinking something and talking.
"Hey Barnes! You never introduced me to your daughter." Sam said looking down at me. I backed up a bit, hiding behind Bucky's leg.
"Yeah cause I knew your ugly mug would scare her off Wilson." Bucky scoffed. I heard Pietro let out a howling laugh.
"Whatever, dad." Dad? Was Bucky my dad? He protected me and took care of me, but so did Steve. Were they both my dads?
"Lyr, you okay Doll?" Bucky frowned, his flesh hand placed on my cheek. I quickly nodded.
"Well, Sam made pancakes if you want some." I absentmindedly agreed. Why was he taking care of me like this? I realized who he was last night. The Winter Soldier, the man who I trained with most of my years at Hydra, but he wasn't the same assassin. Bucky Barnes was happy, kind, and soft spoken. The soldier said nothing and felt nothing. Maybe someone like me could change if someone like him did.
A plate of pancakes was placed in front of me and I smiled up at Bucky.
"Thanks." I said softly before taking a bite out of the round, fluffy cake.
"Was no one gonna inform me of your new house guest?" A voice asked. I immediately looked to the person and scrambled down from the table, grabbing the knife Bucky gave me to cut the pancakes.
"Stop!" I ordered. The man stopped but I could tell he wasn't happy about it. In fact, I had to wonder if he was ever happy about anything. His face seemed to be stuck in "glare", his eye covered by a black eye patch.
"Lyric! Hey, it's fine. He won't hurt you." Bucky said quickly, placing a hand on my shoulder.
"No promises." The man quipped. Oh he was pissing me off now. I let out a slight growl as I gripped the knife tighter.
"Fury, knock it off! FRIDAY, get Steve down here please." Bucky ordered. The man and I were locked in a staring contest, to see who would break first. He broke as Steve entered the room.
"Fury, what are you doing here?" Steve asked, his voice demanding authority. He wore black track pants and a blue activewear shirt but still managed to look professional next to the Fury man.
"It seems we need to talk, Rogers. I didn't authorize housing orphans." He spoke, his hard as cement.
"Last time I checked, Shield wasn't even really around. You don't authorize anything anymore." Steve shot back.
"I sure authorized a lot when I pulled your ass from the Atlantic." Fury took 3 steps closer to Steve and I was ready to attack. His stance was hostile and that's never good. Bucky must have noticed because he squeezed my shoulder.
"Doll, maybe we should take your breakfast up to the room." He suggested.
"I'm sure she can go up herself. I need to talk to you too, Barnes." Bucky looked at Fury before looking back at me. He gave a reassuring smile before turning to Pietro.
"Pietro, can you take her to our floor please?"
"Of course." I let Pietro lead me away though I really didn't want to. I didn't trust that man.
Bucky's POV
"You essentially picked up a fugitive and now you plan to keep her and play house? Is that what your telling me?" Fury snarled. I rolled my eyes and folded my arms across my chest.
"She's a kid, Nick." I scoffed. I could hear Steve groan softly beside me but I didn't care.
"And where do you get off calling me Nick, James?"
"People call you Fury out of respect and right now, I don't respect you all that much."
"Why's that?"
"You come in here acting as if you own the place, talking about a living, breathing human child as if she's nothing more than a weapon. You don't see people as humans, Nick, that's why I don't respect you." Fury glared at me as Steve shook his head.
"Fair enough," Fury grunted. "I don't see her as a child because she's been under Hydra's influence from since she was a child. What does she know about being good?"
"Fury, you never even gave her the chance to show that she's good," Steve chimed in. "I think...I want to be responsible for her." Fury and I both looked at Steve, a set look on his face.
"You? Responsible for her? What, you're gonna be her dad?"
"Maybe I will be. She doesn't have any other family. Her grandparents are dead and so are her parents. She has no aunts, uncles, or godparents."
"Then put her in an orphanage."
"They can't deal with her trauma there like we can here." Fury pinched his nose bridge taking deep breaths. Yeah we've definitely pissed him off now.
"Captain Rogers, you are apart of the Avengers. There's no time to be babysitting kids." He said slowly, obviously still trying to calm himself.
"All due respect, Director Fury, there's no Shield so what I do on my time, that's my choice. I'm not letting her leave my sight. She's my responsibility now because I promised I would protect her." Steve replied. I nudged him slightly, drawing his attention to me.
"Steve, are you sure about this? What do we know about raising a teenager?" I whispered.
"Buck, I know, but I can't abandon her." I sighed, mulling it over in my head. A teen is less reliant than a baby, she seems nice enough, plus she's already attached to us.
"Well, I promised to protect her too, so I guess I'm also her dad." I concluded. Fury looked between the two of us and sighed.
"I guess I can't stop you, but you better be serious about this. Last thing I need is some girl endangering the world."
"She'll be fine with us." I vowed. He left the conference room as Steve and I looked at each other.
"Did we just adopt a teenager?" I mumbled in disbelief.
"We did pal." Steve replied, his tone matching mine. What the fuck did we just do?
