A/N: Yeah I said new updates every Tuesday and Thursday but I kinda lied. I'm updating whenever now. ENJOY :))))
Steve's POV
"Lyric Roy, daughter of scientist James Roy, was not located after her parents death." Natasha read from the old news article. I sighed and looked at Lyric who was now wearing a grey jacket (Bucky's) and black sweatpants (Natasha's).
"Wolfgang Von Strucker—killed mother." Lyric mumbled. Without thinking twice about it, I took her hand in mine offering a supportive squeeze.
"It's okay. You're safe now." I reminded her.
"Are you gonna be okay?" Bucky asked. He was still having trouble with his sympathy so his facial expression was more guarded than caring, but I knew he was genuinely concerned.
"Fine." Lyric mumbled. She pulled her hand out of my hold and walked back to the guest room. I looked between Natasha and Bucky, unsure whether to follow her or not.
Lyric's POV
I sat on the bed with my chin resting on my knees. Within just a few hours of being away from Hydra, I'm starting to remember. I don't even know if I want to remember. I should just go back. The real world isn't a good place for me. It's too...normal. I'm not used to normal anymore.
I only know my name and what they made me do. The weapon I was. Hydra's very own child soldier. The red, so much red staining my hands, the ground, my clothes, my face. A monster. I was a monster. I still am a monster.
Steve is good. Steve has been good since I came, vowing to protect me and offering space to me. But I don't deserve it. No, no kindness for me. I'm bad, rotten. Tears struck my eyes and I furiously wiped them away with the back of my hand. I don't belong here.
Steve's POV
I walked into the bedroom to see Lyric sitting on the bed. Her long curls of hair were shielding her face from my view.
"Hey, you okay?" I asked.
"Tired." She replied, but I didn't believe her.
"Okay but what more than that?" Lyric pushed the hair out of her face and I got a good look at her red rimmed brown eyes. She was crying.
"I'm a monster." She spat, venom lacing her words as she glared at me.
"No, Hydra programmed you to be a monster. Who you are starting now, that's who you really are, not what they made you to be. If you were truly a monster, I don't think you'd cry about it." I explained gently. The glare on her face softened as a small huff escaped her lips, a pout forming on her face. She looked like a child, making a quiet laugh escape my lips.
"Come on, you should try to get as much sleep as you can. Besides, I think it's already around 10ish." I offered. I went to turn out the light when a strangled gasp stopped me. I turned to see Lyric watching my hand with fear.
"D-Dark?" She stuttered.
"Would you rather me leave the light on? Or you can come sleep with Bucky and me in our room." I could see Lyric weighing her options in her mind. She got off the bed and stood next to me, watching me with her big brown eyes.
"Our room it is." I concluded, leading the way. Bucky was climbing into bed when we entered the room.
"Buck, Lyric is gonna sleep in here tonight with us. That okay?" I explained. Bucky looked over at Lyric who kept eye contact with him.
"Sure kid." He shrugged. I pointed to my bed.
"You can sleep there tonight, I'll just set up a little something on the floor for me." Lyric shook her head and grabbed my hand.
"You sleep too." She demanded. I let her pull me to the bed.
"It's fine, I've slept in worse places than on the floor." She was adamant, so in the end, I ended up getting in the king bed as Lyric looked at me.
"Still safe?" She whispered hopefully.
"Still safe. Get some sleep, Darlin'." The nickname felt so natural rolling off my tongue that it didn't even surprise me much. Lyric nodded and turned from me. Within 10 minutes I heard her breathing become slow and knew she was asleep. With that information, I let my own eyes shut as sleep took over.
Lyric's POV
I woke up in a cold sweat and scanned my surroundings. Steve was next to me cuddling into a pillow while across from me, Bucky was hanging off the bed with the sheets ruffled. I cautiously sat up and crawled off of the bed. I made my was to the door, left the floor, and started wandering.
The tower was enormous as I walked into the elevator. There were so many different buttons for different floors. I clicked the one that said main. Upon exiting the metal box, I saw a silver kitchen illuminated by lights from under the cabinets and a living room with two couches and three recliner like chairs. I felt my stomach slightly grumble and it dawned on me that I was hungry. I kept walking until I passed a transparent room with light coming from it. I could see the man with the goatee and brown hair (Tony I think they called him?) haunched over a table, working with something. I inched over to the door and opened it enough that I could get through. I guess he heard my footsteps with how fast he looked over at me.
"What are you doing up kid?" He asked. I shrugged and looked down at my feet. He would yell at me for this, I just knew he would. Instead, I was surprised to hear Tony sigh and put something down.
"Was it a nightmare?" He inquired softly. I looked up at him and nodded slowly. He was facing me and pulled a stool next to him.
"Come'ere. I'm gonna show you something cool." He smiled slightly. I gave a weak smile and walked to the stool. I sat down and looked at the metal thing Tony was working on.
"Okay so this is gonna make the repulsors in my suit way better and cooler. Wanna watch me do it?" Tony asked. His enthusiasm was genuine and it rubbed off on me as I smiled and nodded eagerly. Tony chuckled and handed me a pair of goggles.
"I'm not the best handyman at times." He confessed. I giggled and put them on. Tony went to work on the repulsors. It was silent aside from the sound of tinkering. It was almost therapeutic.
"Ya know, I had a bad dream too. That's why I'm up." He didn't look up from the repulsors once. "It's okay to get bad dreams. We just need to realize that they're not real and they're just dreams." I silently took heed of his words and let him know by slowly resting my head on his shoulder. Tony smiled down at me while I sighed in content. Maybe I could get some sleep now...
