Eleanor stood behind me as she pulled the dress tighter. I sucked in, trying to get the middle to fit as perfectly as possible. I felt her tie the knot, and I couldn’t breathe. The day was really here.
They led me to the mirror and I gasped at the sight. I couldn’t even tell it was me. I closed my eyes as a tear drop fell. I was getting married to Liam today. After today, I would be Sarah Payne.
“I was going to wait until after, but I think this is a good enough time. Congratulations Sarah. You finally got your prince.” Chanelle whispered in my ear.
The day after he proposed, Chantelle rushed back over. She took the kids so that we could be alone. He took me shopping for an engagement ring, as well as a wedding ring. Every time I walked into another jewelers shop, I would break down in tears. It took me two days, but I found the perfect one.
Liam had picked it out, knowing that I wouldn’t. He told me to stand outside the shop till he was ready. He called me in, and he was standing in the middle of the store, away from all the rings. He put it on me and it slid right in. It glistened on my hand I knew it was the one.
He smiled as I finally chose it. He wouldn’t let me know the price, and I still don’t know today, but quite frankly, I’m beginning to not care. I closed my eyes, standing still afraid to sit down for fear of ruining the dress and all the hard work that was put into making me a beautiful bride.
The girls names had been changed halfway through the planning process. Knowing they would’ve started school before all the details were finalized, we decided it would be best to change it now. Their names were now, Kaylie and Emily Payne. In about an hour, my name would be Sarah Payne. We would be a family.
There was a knock on the door, and everyone turned to see who it was. I saw Carter peek through the door and I laughed.
“What do you want?” I chuckled.
“Just to see how you’re holding up. Liam’s afraid you’re getting cold feet.”
“Go tell him he’ll be the first to know if I get cold feet.” I laughed.
He sat down on the bench opposite of me.
“Can I say told you so yet?”
“What?” I giggled.
“Remember when you worked for Mrs. Shay? Your first day, about how you would be in love with someone by the end of the summer?”
“I wasn’t in love with him…”
“Liar. You we’re in love with him the first day you saw him again. So, for sake of argument. I told you so.”
“I swear. How would I have ever lived my life without you?”
“Honestly, I don’t know.” He laughed.
He got up and came in for a hug. All the girls in the room held him back, and I pushed him away. He looked around, giving everyone a startled look.
“Sorry. We’ve worked too hard to make me pretty.”
“You’re always pretty Sarah, but I’m sure Liam’s going to tell you that enough.”
“I love you Carter.”
“I love you too. Good luck.” He smiled.
He walked out of the room and it was like it became official. That the wedding was truly here. I sighed, looking in the mirror one last time, making sure everything was perfect.
About forty-five minutes and I began to get anxious. I was pacing around. We had already done pictures throughout the day, but now it was down to about the last fifteen minutes until there was no backing out. I bowed my head, absentmindedly picking at my nails. Everyone had left me alone, going off to mingle or just quickly get over the nerves themselves.
