Chapter 9 - Questions

All I thought about the next day was Jai. Jai and that girl. Jai kissing me. Jai hugging me. Jai smiling. Jai looking at me. All these emotions burned through me all at once and I felt myself mentally dying. My phone rings and I jump from the sudden sound.

"What do you want?" I ask.

"Who is this?" Jai says, he sounds nervous and I hear something crash in the background.

"Jai. You called me. It's Gemma."

"Right, of course." He says.

"Well, why'd you call?" I ask.

"Can you meet me at the beach?" He asks.

"Sure." I say and hang up. I get
dressed into more suitable clothes than pyjamas for the beach. I grab my phone and tell my mum where I am going before I walk in the summer heat towards the beach. Jai was already there waiting for me, slumped against a tree. He see's me and jumps up to greet me. He seemed jittery and nervous.

"Hi." He says with a shaky breath.

"Hey." I say and smile.

"So, what's the problem?" I ask.

"I want to ask you a question." No.

"Shoot." I say.

"Well, Gemma. You know how I openly have this huge love of you." He says and I nod. He takes my hands and looks in my eyes.

"Will you date me again?" He asks and I look away from his intense stare with a small smile. What was I going to say? How can I possibly answer that question?

"Jai. I don't know." I say and the disappointment is evident in his voice and eyes as he continues to look for eye connection. I look back up to him and he looked disappointed, sad even. I didn't mean for it to sound like a 'no'.

"But it's not a no." I add and he slightly smiles.

"You need more time?" He says, being very understanding now.

"Yes. Sorry Jai." I say and walk away. I felt like ripping my hair out. I'm sick of this heartbreak and chasing. I'll date him again then he'll do something to break my heart and he'll chase me again. We're are 15!... Wait. It's Jai's birthday tomorrow. I get home and Kayla comes running up to me.

"Mum said that you have to take me to the shops to get Jai a birthday present!" Kayla says.

"I said to ask her, Kayla, not force her." Mum says from the doorway.

"Alana asked us over for dinner for Jai's birthday and Kayla wants to get him a present for all of us. It'd help if you could go with her because you know him better than anyone, apparently."

"Okay. Let's go." I say and Kayla runs out of the door.

"Thanks mum!" I snap and follow Kayla. We go to the closest shopping centre and Kayla roams around the shops for three hours until she finds something suitable. She pays with the $100 mum gave her and we leave. I was sick of walking around the shops by the end of the time we were there and when I got home I plunged down onto the couch with a good book.

"Gemma!" Kayla calls.

"Can I have help with wrapping the present?" She asks.

"Ask mum, god dammit." I say.

"I already did. She told me to ask you." She says and with a groan I walk over to her on the ground and show her how to wrap the present. She hugs me afterwards.

"Thank you." and runs off.

Just leave me alone.
