"Why Kayla? What's wrong? Is mum okay?" I ask, scared.
"I don't know. Just come home!"
"We have to go home." I say. Jai doesn't ask, he just nods and starts to pack. Once we finish packing our bags, we hand back the room key, and rush to the airport.
There is only silence the whole trip home, it was a very long and awkward trip.
The moment we arrive in Campbelltown we head straight for the hospital. I'm so tired and drained, but I need to know if my mother is okay.
The room she was sleeping in is dull, she is hooked up to many machines and cords hung from pretty much everywhere. She looked so thin and frail, Kayla lays asleep on the hospital chair next to her bed, they both looked so tired.
"Gemma, I take it." The doctor walks in the room saying.
"Yeah, her eldest daughter." I say, "Is she going to be okay?"
"Your mother has cancer... In her brain. It's advancing fast and we've put her into a coma. I don't know how long we can give her to live, but I give her under a week." The doctor says and I collapse, but Jai catches me just before I hit the ground.. The thought of my beautiful mother not being alive anymore hurts... A lot. I can't imagine a world without her.
"What does that mean for my sister and I?" I ask.
"Further arrangements will be made." He says, he gives me a sympathetic smile before leaving the room.
I sit down on the hard chair next to her bed. I hold her hand and whisper, "don't leave me ma. You can't do that to your daughters. I want you to see Kayla get married, I want you see me have children, and I want you to watch your girls get older, hopefully pass on your wisdom. I want to see you grow grey hairs, I don't want to watch you be berried before your fifties. Ma, prove those doctors wrong."
And she did. Three weeks later, of me sitting beside her bed, she woke up and even though the cancer is still there, she's alive.
Jai's mum moved in to our house when she got home from visiting relatives in New Zealand, and she now helps look after the house and mum. My mother can't do anything anymore, and Jai, Kayla and I can't cope on our own.
Jai and his family are probably the best things that ever happened to me. I wouldn't change that for the world.
"Jai, I owe you and your mother a lot, I don't think I'd still be alive if you guys weren't here to help." I say as we cuddle watching a movie.
"I protect and support you forever, Gemma. That's what I'm here for." He says, and reverts his attention to my face. I look over into his eyes, and he smiles a bit.
"You're my one and only." He says. I smile, and cuddle into his arm. Mine.
"I have a plan." I say and grab Jai's hand. I pull him downstairs into the lounge room where the mum's are and I call Kayla downstairs.
"Seeing as though we didn't really celebrate Christmas, and it would have been depressing and boring if we did, I have thought of something," I say, pause for affect, "why don't we celebrate it now?"
Everyone nods, except for mum.
"Why don't you guys go up to Queensland or something? Seeing as though I ruined your London trip, and we'll celebrate the way we were going to, through Skype." She says, with a slight smile. She hasn't really smiled since the incident, I feel so bad, she's so depressed.
"No, we can't. Not right after you just got diagnosed with cancer." I say, and she shakes her head.
"Go up there, and enjoy the beautiful summer beaches. You'll love it!" She says, with as much enthusiasm as she can do.
"Yeah. That's a great idea, Anne." Jai's mum says. I look over to Jai, and he's grinning.
"Okay." I give in and Jai picks me up in a hug. Wow, I've never seen him so happy.
"The surf up there isn't great, but if we go to that Island or stay below it, it'd be fine." Jai says, happily.
"Road trip?" I ask, and he nods
"Road trip it is."
