Chapter 23 - Why do I trust anyone?

I just love it when Jai has a birthday, everything is jolly again.

"Please tell me I didn't loose it!" I hiss at myself as I rummage through my room.

"What'd you loose?" Jai asks as he walks into the room.

"Nothing." I say, "just this bracelet."

Smooth.

"Oh. Okay."

"So, my mum's having this big barbecue, only my mum, aunty Rachie, you and your mum and sister are invited. Can I add you to the list?" He asks.

"Of course." I say and he leaves not long afterwards, which gave me some time to find or organise another present for Jai. I didn't forget, I just feel like I should maybe trick him a bit. I call Jai's mum and tell her about my surprise.

"So, you want me to set it all up while you take him out somewhere and distract him?" She asks.

"Yeah. We'll go bowling or something. I don't know, but tell him to wear something suitable for a date because Gemma is taking him on a date." I say.

"Alright." She says and hangs up.

"Mum. I'm going on a date with Jai." I tell her.

"Okay, but you're eating breakfast first." She says, I sigh and eat my raisin toast. After about an hour I put on a white and blue spotty dress and walk towards Jai's place. It's weirdly cold today. When I get there, I knock quickly on the door and wait. Alana answers not long afterwards.

"Gemma you look wonderful. Come in." She says, quietly. Jai runs down the steps and doesn't see me at first.

"Hey mum, does this look.." He starts, but notices my presence. He just stares at me for a moment and I stare back. He's wearing cream jeans and a white t-shirt, he looks amazing.

"Have a good day." Jai's mum says and walks away.

"Wow. You look beautiful." He says and I smile.

"So do you." I say and he grins. "I mean cute."

He laughs and we leave. He must be thinking I forgot his birthday by now. We walk up the street in silence, I shiver in the cold and Jai notices.

"Are you cold?" He asks.

"No. I'm fine." I say and he shakes his head and gives me his coat anyway.

"Thank you." I say. I love it when he does that. We get to the bowling club and we pay for two games. That should keep us preoccupied for a while.

The first game I won, but I swear Jai was letting me win. In the second game we were up to about the fifth round and I notice Jai looks sad.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

"Nothing. I'm fine." He says and has his go. I let him win this time, which made him feel not much better. After we left the bowling club, we both had a sandwich each, for lunch. It was delicious. After that we go back to my place, not passing Jai's house and we watch a movie.

"Are you sure your okay?" I ask.

"Yeah." He says and grabs my hand as Leonardo Di Caprico hides from his long lost girlfriend behind a wall, in other words, we're watching The Great Gatsby. It was finally 5pm by the time we watch two movies so we start to walk over to Jai's place, I've got to say, I'm a bit excited. Jai opens the door and turns the light on.

"Mum." He calls.

"SURPRISE!" Everyone jumps out. Everyone meaning, one of Jai's friends, my mum, my sister, his aunty and Jai's mum. It worked, the smile on Jai's face was better than anything in the world, even better than raisin toast this morning.

"Wow." He says.

"Gemma organised it." My sister says.

"I thought you forgot."

"Of course I didn't forget, you should look through you notifications more often." I say, in other words I know his password and I tend to log on and favourite some tweets, oops. Most of the time I talk to one of Jai's friends, her names Pheobe and she's really nice, Jai doesn't talk to me the whole time until now. Jai walks up to me and whispers in my ear, 'Can we talk?' I look up at him and his eyes were glistening in the light.

"I'll be back." I say to Pheobe and follow him into the kitchen.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

"Thanks for this." He says.

"It's okay.. oh my god, I totaly forgot." I say and look around for it. Where did she put it? She said she put it in the top cupboard, but it's not there.

"WHat are you looking for?" He asks.

"Stay here." I say and leave the room, looking for my sister. I finally find her amoungst the few people here.

"Where did you put it?" I ask her.

"Where did I put what?" She asks, only then do I realise she's trying to flirt with Jai's friend, Andrew.

"Jai's present." I say and glance up at Andrew quickly then back down to my stupid sister.

"Oh. Uhm, about that." She says and walks into the next room for a couple of seconds then back again with the box his present came with. She opens it and the photo frama is cracked right down the middle of Jai and I.

"You've got to be kidding me." I say.

"You idiot. This was expensive. Ugh, why did I even try to trust you with this?" I almost yell, but keep my voice down and storm into the kitchen where Jai has his head on the table, a quiet purr escapes his mouth. He's asleep.

"Jai." I whisper in his ear.

"What?" He mumbles.

"Let's go to bed." I say and he lifts his head up to look at me, he looks so tired.

"But I've got to tell you what I was going to say." He mumbles again.

"Tell me in the morning. Come on." I say, quietly and help him up to his room, him saying goodnight to all the guests before fumbling up the stairs. He lays down slowly on his bed and buries his face in his pillow. I go to leave, but he grabs my hand.

"Stay with me." He whispers, I lay down next to him and he starts making the sound as he did in the kitchen. It's so cute. He looked so peaceful as he slept, so undisturbed, his eyelids perfectly touching and his hands limp, but alive in mine. I'm still not sure if I love him, but I'm slowly getting there.
