i slowly open my eyes to ethans body right next to mine on my bed

i peel my arm off his waist and slowly sit up. i don't remember him falling asleep next to me? did i let him?

i get off the bed and take a deep breath. i cant keep doing this. i must've feel asleep before him because i wouldn't have let him sleep on the same bed as me

i leave the room and walk down the stairs to see madison making breakfast. her back is too me and i'm assuming she is making pancakes

"good morning" she says without even turning around

i get down the stairs and walk over to her, "good morning" i eye at what she is making, pancakes. i was right

"how are you?" she looks over at me

"a little better i guess" i press my lips together as i watch her grab a plate from the cabinet

"i cant believe joey found out where you were and begged you to come back after what he did. can you believe guys?" she rolls her eyes

a chuckle escapes my mouth, "i know, he's use to me always going back to him and so am i. he was a broken boy and i always wanted to help him"

"he's toxic elle-"

i interrupt her, "no he is not. joey is a lot of things but he is not toxic"

she rolls her eyes again, "your boyfriend cheating on you and begging for you back isn't toxic?"

"it's complicated mads" i sit at the tall bar stools at the black marble island

"you're always saying that. it shouldn't be complicated" she hands me a plate and i thank her

i wish i could tell her. i want her to understand why i'm feeling like this but if she ever calls the cops on me, i'll never see my kids again and joey will be dead

"anyway" she raises her brow, "how's ethan"

"did you tell him to spend the night here?" i stab my pancake

she tries to hide the smile on her face but fails, "maybeee"

my eyes widen, "mads you need to stop please"

"ugh why! you guys are so adorable. plus it's so cute how you just randomly met in new york after all those years!" she smiles

"mads you don't understand. ethan and i ended on bad terms, like really bad terms that i'm surprised he even is helping me" i sigh

"helping you?" she furrows her brows

fuck, "yea. he's helping me get use to living in new york" i chew on my food slowly

she just nods and takes a bite from her pancake

"anyway, when are we going hiking?" i try and change the subject but fail when i see her eyes focus on something behind me

"good morning ethan!" she looks at me and i give her a death glare

i turn around and look at ethan. he walks over to me and gives me a small hug before walking over and giving a hug to mads as well, "good morning"

"want some?" she points to her pancake

"uh, no thanks. i got to get going actually" he rubs his eyes, "i'm sorry for spending the night it is very unkind of me but thank you. elle i'll call you later, okay?" he digs his pockets and pulls out his keys

"yea" i smile

"bye ethan, have a good day" mads says before he walks out the door

the door closes and i look at mads, "i just want to be friends with him"
