Chapter 15 A long rocky road ahead

Ricky pov

I woke up the next morning hoping that the previous night was just a horrible nightmare . However when I opened my eyes I saw that I was sitting in the rocking chair in my son,s hospital room . When I had woken up enough to realize that John was crying I got up and lifted him from his crib . Good morning little man I said to him as I securely wrapped my arms around him . Alright, alright daddy will get you changed I told him that I laid him down on the changing table. When I was changing his diaper I realized he was still bleeding a lot . After I swaddled him I did the best I could to comfort him . After a while I was trying to get him to settle down I pressed the call button to get one of the nurses to get John something to eat . While I waited for the nurse to come with a bottle for John I changed his diaper . John was very fussy because he was both hungry and in pain . A few minutes later a nurse knocked on the door holding a bottle of formula for John to eat . As soon as I started feeding him he begin to relax . Just as John finished his breakfast there was a knock on the door . Come in I said slightly confused wondering who it could be . Good morning my babies my mom said John and I as she came over to give us a hug . My father followed suit . Good morning mom good morning dad I said to them both . How are you son ? My mom asked me . I'm alright but I am a little hungry and tired I said to her . Perfect timing my dad said . What do you mean ? I asked him . Well you can go and get some breakfast while your mother and I bond with John for a little bit he told me . Thank you mom and dad I would really appreciate it I told them. We know you do my mom said . If you want after you eat you can drive home and get some rest and a shower as well as pack some clothes my mom said . Oh well actually I don't know how comfortable I would feel leaving John with everything that's happened yesterday Isaid to them. However I do appreciate the offer I told them . I think then I will quickly go to the cafeteria and get some breakfast I said. Is it alright if I quickly grabbed something to eat ? I asked them . Ricky of course it's alright that's what we're here for my mom said with a smile on her face . I love you guys thanks so much for being here to help me with John I told them as I left the room . I went to the cafeteria and quickly got something for myself to eat. I ate my breakfast as quickly as I possibly could . After I had finished I immediately made my way back to John's hospital room . I could hear the sound of John crying as I walked down the hallway his room was located in . I lately knocked on the door . oh Ricky I'm so glad you're here my mom said . She stood up for the rocking chair and handed my crying son to my dad . As soon as you left to go and get something to eat John started freaking out and your father and I didn't know what to do she told me with panic in her voice. Calm down mom I said to her. Calm down ? What do you mean by calm down ? What's wrong with him? He asked me. Well 1 he was probably confused because I left him with you guys . 2 I'm pretty sure he needs a diaper change I said. No he doesn't my mom said. Yes he does I told her. The nurse told me that he needs to be changed more frequently so the infected area doesn't get irritated so much I said. I laid John down and started changing him . After I was finished I swaddled John and sat down in the rocking chair with him in my lap . Alright little man it's okay daddy's not going anywhere I told John as I gently rocked him back and forth . Your father and I feel so guilty I thought what happened on your date with Bella my mom said . Mom I promise you there's nothing to feel guilty about I told her. John is and will always be my number one priority I told her . Bella totally and completely understands that I said . I'm glad she does but people do have their limits my mom said. I know I said . You are an amazing father and a wonderful student . You work hard in your job and you haven't gotten into any trouble since John was born . Ricky you deserve to have someone in your life . You deserve to be happy my mom said with a hopeful smile on her face . Thanks mom that means a lot to me I told her. It will happen one day I said . Do you think it will happen with bella ? She asked me. Maybe , maybe not I said. To be honest I don't really know I told her. I think that it's way too early and our relationship to know anything for sure right now I told them . After a while I'm talking with my mom and dad they told me they had to go to work . Alright I'm very sorry Ricky but your mother and I need to get to work like I told me. It's alright dad I totally understand I said. You two have a good rest of the day I told them . Thank you so much for being here for me and John I told them . You are welcome sweetheart my mom said . Both my mom and my dad gave John and I each a hug before they left . We love you they both said in unison as they closed the door behind them. Alright John now it's just you and me I said to him if I kissed him on the head . He started to get fussy again. Oh John What's Wrong little man? I asked him as I lifted him up onto my shoulder . shsh alright, alright I think it's time for your nap I said to him . Before I put him down I teens to taper to make sure that he was comfortable . I carefully swaddled him and gently rocked him back and forth . While I rocked him I I sang a soothing lullaby to help him fall asleep . After a while of rocking and singing to him I became very apparent that it wasn't working . I kissed his forehead and then quickly realized that his body temperature had gone up . I rushed over to his crib and pressed the call button . Immediately afterwards a nurse ran in the room. I think that his body temperature spiked I told her my voice filled with worry and fear . Yes you're absolutely right Mr underwood his body temperature has gotten higher the nurse told me after she checked John with a thermometer. I'll be right back she told me. I'm going to go and get some medication to help bring it down she told me. I lifted him up in my arms and she left the room. It's alright buddy you are going to be feeling better very soon I told him. Just then the nurse came back with some medication for John . Alright we have two options of getting the drugs into him the nurse told me. Option 1 the needle she held it up. Option 2 liquid she held a syringe and a bottle full of liquid medication for infants . Which one do you think would be the easiest ? She asked me . I think that the needle would be the easiest meth of getting the medication into his system I told her. Alright then let's do it she said. Do you want to do it the same way we did it last time ? She asked me . Yes I think that would work best I told her. I unwrapped John out of his blanket and sat him on my lap being sure to hold him as still as possible . Alright here we go the nurse said as she kneeled down like she did before . 1 , 2 , 3 we are all done she said. Just as the needle was taken out of his arm John started screaming. It's alright little man . It's all over I told him as I lifted him up to give him a hug. He clung on to me extremely tightly . alright buddy it's okay daddy's got you I said to him. I stood up and started swaying him side to side . Listen the nurse said interrupting my attempt to sooth John . Yeah what is it? I asked her . The medicine I gave him should make him feel drowsy she told me. That is the only side effect of it she explained to me. Alright no problem thanks for letting me know I told her as she left the room . Of course I'm just doing my job she said to me as she shut the door behind her . John continued crying. Shsh it's okay little man . I know, I know you're not feeling good I said to him as continued continued to sooth the best I could . After a long while he finally fell fast asleep still clinging onto my shoulder. Once I had put him down for a nap I felt so exhausted myself so I decided to try to fall asleep .

Bella pov

I wonder how Ricky and john are doing ? I have an idea. I think I am going to skip class and go to the store and get a toy for john. After that I am going to go to the hospital to surprise them. I walk into the store and immediately go into the baby section. I look around for a bit and then I finally find the perfect toy for john. It is a teddy bear had with a blue blanket attached the end of it . I think that john will love it I thought to myself as I checked out of the store . I got my car and headed to the hospital.

Ricky pov

I woke up from my nap to both the sound of my son crying and a knock on the door. I got up from the rocking chair and lifted John into my arms. Okay buddy shsh I said to him. There was another knock at the door. Come in I said. Hi Ricky a familiar voice said . Bella ? Hey what are you doing here you? I asked her. I decided to surprise you and John she said to me. But you have school I said to her. I know I decided to skip it she said. What about the sign on the door? I asked her. I told them I was your sister she told me. That is so sweet of you Bella I said to her. I laid John back down in his crib and went over to give her a hug. Thank you so much it means a lot to both of us I told her. Too bad you're my sister I said to her. I guess that means we can't do this I said to her as I leaned in and kissed her passionately . I guess so she responded and kissed me back just as passionately as I kissed her . Just then we were interrupted by the sound of John crying. Just give me a minute I said and then I went over to John's crib to lift him up . Hey little man it's okay you want daddy? I asked him . shsh I went back over to follow up with John in my arms. John you remember daddy's friend Bella right? John buried his face in my shoulder and started crying in response . It's alright I said to him . As you can see he is a little fussy and shy I told her. I'm sorry I said . It's okay there's no need to be sorry I totally understand he told me. I am sorry Bella I said to her. Hold on I need to get his diaper changed I told her. It,s alright no worries she said. I took john over to the change table and quickly got him changed him.

Bella pov

Hey Ricky can I ask you something? Sure what is it ? He asked me. What is your full name? I asked him. Richard Robert Underwood. Oh cool I said. What's john,s full name? I asked him. Jonathan Richard Underwood he told me . why do you ask? He questioned me. I don't know I guess l am just curious I told him. What's your full name? He asked me. Isabella faith taylor I told him . that is a beautiful name told me. He sat down in the rocking chair with John in his arms. Guess what? I asked him. What ? He looked confused. I have a surprise for john I told him. Oh you didn't have to do anything for him he told me . I know I didn't have to but I wanted to alright I said. I took the toy that I had gotten at the store out of my purse. This is for john I said. I handed the toy to Ricky.

Ricky pov

This means so much to both john and me I said. I know it does she told me. What do you think John ? Do you like it ? I asked him. He immediately grabbed the toy form my lap. I think he likes it I told her. Can you say thank you to Bella? Once again John buried his head in my shoulder and started crying. I am so sorry Bella I said. I think that he is hungry I told her. I paged the nurse to tell her that john needed something to eat. While we continued to get to know each other better. Just then the nurse brought a bottle for John to eat. Thank you I told her when she handed me the bottle and left . Bella and I continue talking while I said John. She told me about the time that she went to a Taylor Swift concert and I told her about the summer before band camp when I took a photography class. An hour and a half later Bella looked at her phone to check the time. Ricky look I really enjoyed hanging out with you and John but I have to go she told me. My parents will be wondering where I am she said . It's alright Bella I get it I told her. She came over to me and gave me a kiss before she left. I'll text you later okay she told me . Alright that sounds good I told her. I will reply to your text messages when I get the chance to I told her smiling at John . Alright no problem have a good night she told me . You too I told her.
