I looked around for Aunt and found her in her room. I knocked on her door to gain her attention and she looked happy to see me.
“Camilla! Come in my dear!” She said and I walked in. She hugged me. “How are you?” She asked.
“I'm fine maa,” I replied and looked at the bangles in her hands. “They're lovely,” I said truthfully.
“Yes,” She smiled. Her eyes shone with delight. “My mum gave it to me. It is our ancestral bangles and she told me it was always passed on to the daughters on their wedding days. For those that gave birth to males, I guess it would be given to their daughters-in-law,” She explained. I nodded. “Have you seen Xena yet?” She asked as she put both bangles in their box.
“Yes aunt. I was just coming from her room,” I said.
“Okay. Tell me, is Tammy coming for the wedding?” She asked. “She promised to be around for Xena's wedding and even help with the preparations. Please tell me she'll be here,” She begged.
“Aunt...”
“Madam?” One of the maids called.
“Yes Kaila? Is anything the matter?” Aunt asked.
“The Father is here,” Kaila said.
“Oh? I'll be down soon,” She said. Kaila nodded and left. “Call Tammy and ask when she'll be landing. I'll be back,” She walked away.
“But aunt?” I sighed out of frustration. I walked out of the room and shut the door. I dialed Hayden.
“Hey, missing me?” He asked.
“Oh stop it! Missing you my foot,” I replied.
He gasped. “My heart...”
“Stop being dramatic and tell me if you've found Jewel,” I said.
“Oh yes. We are on our way to the beach she works at... Listen I'll call you back.”
“Wait but...” He hung up already. I groaned and slapped my phone against my palm. I looked downstairs and found Ravi and Xena talking to some people. He looked at me and smiled. I tightened my grip on my phone angrily.
“Camilla dear,” Uncle called, climbing up the stairs. I relaxed.
“Uncle,” I went to hug him.
“I knew you'd come. Is Tammy coming or is she here already?” Uncle asked.
“No uncle. Actually mum might not make it,” I said.
“Why not?”
“Well she... She has... She's a bit ill at the moment so she won't be able to come,” I lied. Guilt washed over me.
“My oh my. That's rather sad. But it's fine. You're here at least,” He said. I smiled a bit.
“Camilla!” Xena called from downstairs. I looked down. “Come quick!”
“Okay!” I shouted back. “I should go uncle,” I said.
“Yes,” He nodded. I went to meet them.
“Camilla, this is Reena. Reena, meet my number one in everything, Camilla,” She introduced me to a black haired lady. She wore a traditional Indian dress and I folded her hands to greet me.
“Namaste,” She said. I did it too.
“You're learning fast,” Xena said. I laughed. “Anyway, what dress can you make for her?” She asked.
“A dress?” I asked.
“Of course! You aren't gonna dress like some church mum to my wedding,” She said.
“I have a good dress sense. Don't say that,” I replied.
“Yeah, you do. Anyway, what are we gonna do about this?”
“I can manage to sew the dress you chose,” Reena said. “I just need her measurement and I'll get it here tomorrow.”
“Good,” Xena said.
“What dress are we talking about exactly?” I asked.
“It's just a simple skirt and blouse,” Xena replied.
“I honestly don't like the sound of your ‘simple’,” I said.
She chuckled and patted my shoulder. “You'll love it baby. Trust me and get your measurement taken quickly,” She said.
“Okay,” I agreed. The dress can't be so bad anyway. Reena took out a book and a pencil and a measuring tape.
.
.
The day arrived finally and I felt so guilty that I was gonna ruin my best friend's special day. It was just as busy as yesterday and the designers and makeup artists were working their magic on us.I looked at my face in the mirror. This was a different type of Camilla, bedizened in a long white skirt adorned with stones and sequences all over that covered half my stomach and a marching ruffled-sleeved bandeau top. The entire outfit exposed a little of my stomach skin. My hair was packed into a french twist updo and my makeup was simple but elegant.
Aunt walked in on us trying to get Xena into her wedding dress. It seemed as though she added more weight over the last two days and the dress wasn't made with her measurement.
“And... There you go!” The makeup artiste, Laura Dupa said, finally getting her fitted into the white ball gown.
“You look so pretty darling,” Aunt said, a tear slipped from her eyes.
“Maa? Don't cry,” Xena said, wiping the tear off.
“Oh, it's just... I can't believe my little baby is all grown up and getting married,” Aunt said.
“You gonna make me cry,” Xena said faintly and hugged her mother.
I stood some feet away from them, staring at the lovely moment. My phone rang and I went to answer it.
“What's the plan?” I heard Ian's voice which I could now identity anywhere.
“Your queen will be at the wedding. We'll hand her over to you and you'll return Amelia and my mum safely,” I said.
“Shall I bring your mum to the wedding too?” Ian asked.
“Yes. And do me a favour, get her a beautiful white dress and get her to wear it. Don't mess up Ian,” I said.
“Confident much,” He chuckled.
“And the diamond?” I asked, ignoring his reply.
“It's with me darling. Safe and sound. And in the hands of it's rightful owner. See you in some hours,” He said and hung up.
“Camy, what are you doing here?” Uncle asked.
“Nothing uncle. Just receiving an important phone call. Shall we?”
“Of course!” He put his hands in mine and we walked into the room together.
