"Hurry up! We're going to be late! The police blockade really slowed us down." Ellen dragged you to the drama club practice; your first this year and only a week after your conversation with everyone at the table.
As you both burst into the room, panting, it was only a few seconds before Sanu, the teacher in charge of drama club, also opened the doors.
"Is everyone here? Gather around." He announced as all the animals came close. Apparently to get into the drama club, someone of good standing had to invite you, so there wasn't a lot of animals despite the popularity. "Today is Wednesday. We don't normally even rehearse on Wednesdays, but we're holding this special meeting of the drama club because there's an issue we need to address."
You looked at Ellen and pointed at yourself. She shook her head, noting it wasn't going to be about you. The relief on your face was plain and she cracked a smile for a second. Soon after, Els and shockingly, Pina, joined you.
"I thought you didn't want to be in this club?" You whispered to Pina.
"Yeah, well, peer-pressure." He huffed, flipped his fluffy wool back and crossed his arms.
"I guess everyone already knows... this morning, Tem, one of our members, was found brutally... um... Why are the carnivores and herbivores sitting apart?" People were shifting to opposite sides of the room. You looked back and forth between the two sides; carnivore and herbivore. Where did you belong? With your friends the herbivores? Or with the carnivores, who understood how it felt to be persecuted?
"Sanu." Ellen spoke, "The only carnivores Tem was friendly with are the ones in this club."
"What's your point?! Are you accusing us?!" A tiger fought back.
"Be honest! One of you was jealous because Tem won a plum role as a first year! That seems plausible to me!"
"How dare you! Herbivores are always doing this! You act like victims but you trash us behind our backs!"
You sat down, very confused about what to do. Both made sense. Both were terrorizing and demonizing. Didn't they learn anything in class?
A red panda came up next to you.
"Uh, hey, not sure what side you go on either?" He asked quietly, amidst the yelling. "I eat bamboo, but I love eating eggs too..."
"Yeah, I only eat eggs away from my friends. They're all herbivores here..." You sighed.
"You want to fight?" Ellen stood up even taller, trying to intimidate the large tiger. "Go ahead! Carnivores get expelled if they injure herbivores!"
"So what?! You're not even worth killing!"
"Really? They don't like, ask other people and have both a carnivore and an herbivore decide?" You asked.
"You must be from a small town. Here, it's not so fair..." The small omnivore replied.
ZWOOP
Suddenly everything was dark. Your eyes actually were more comfortable in this darkness, seeing as you were most active in dawn and twilight hours.
"H-Hey!"
"What's going on?!"
"Did the power go out?!"
"Um, sorry..." A deep, rumbling growl came from above. "The lighting panel malfunctioned... Please go on."
When the light switched on, you saw an absolutely massive grey wolf on a rafter. And your heart pumped just a little bit harder.
