60: Hungry Like A Wolf

"A-Are you sure you can make it, Legoshi? Where are we supposed to go?!" You helped the large carnivore limp out of the hideout, bodies littering the floor around you. "Did you do... all of this?"

"Not a chance. I got help from an old panda guy. He's probably safe though."

But Legoshi wasn't. From above, Chief Lion had dragged himself the window and was aiming his gun.

"I've got one last thing to teach you, stupid pup." He grumbled. "Naive mercy can be fatal."

A bullet penetrated his arm, sending him back to the ground.

"Funny, I agree with you." a young red deer was behind him. "So, sorry, but this is personal. I won't ever let you bother her again. Beg for your life." The gun was lodged in the Chief's mouth before he could make a move. "Do. It. Now. Show me the face of a carnivore who's in fear of his life! SHOW IT TO ME!! BEG FOR YOUR LIFE!"

"d-don't kill me--"

The blood splashed against Louis' face. "Too bad. Old guys never learn. The world we live in is beyond any salvation. No begging can fix it."

The survivors of the lions stumbled into the room.

"B-Boss--"

They were stunned by the presence of the deer.

"I'm live stock number four. I'm small and fragile. But still good enough to eat. Leave nothing by my antlers," He dropped his gun to the floor. His job was done; save those who could save the world. There was nothing left for a deer like him. "Eat me gratefully! I demand it!"

Meanwhile, you had managed to drag Legoshi to a nearby store. You retrieved some bandages and had managed to patch up the worst of the wounds.

"L-Legoshi..." You looked at his torn figure. "I've patched you up, but we need to go to the hospital." You looked up at the black sky, to stop any tears from falling. "I'm really, really, really, sorry, Legoshi." the quivering in your voice betrayed your feelings, but you'd be damned to let it all out now. "You got hurt because of me."

"Dumb thing to apologize for..." he managed to wheeze out.

"No, it's not!" You yelled, "Why would you go so far just to save my life!?"

Legoshi took a deep breath.

"Right now, can we... just get something to eat? I don't have the energy for much else."

You took a few deep breaths to calm yourself down.

"Yeah, let's go."

"Here's a large serving of yakisoba noodles with egg! Eat as much as you want, on the house, kid. You look like you've been through hell..." The server was suspicious, but minded his business.

"Eat." Legoshi held a piece of egg out to you. Gently, you leaned forward and took it off of his chopsticks. He smiled a goofy smile as he dug into his food.

This scene... Legoshi, sitting in front of me, torn to hell, eating cheap yakisoba. This is something that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

"Sir, the last train left a long time ago."

You shook your head as the server replied to something Legoshi had said.

The wolf looked at you, blinking blankly.

It was time to find a hotel.
