42: Louis; Concluded

Suddenly, Louis pulled you close to him, almost in his lap. You were kneeling between his legs, causing your face to heat up.

"Then I'll whisper to you." Louis ran a hand along your mane, which was sticking up on end. "Legoshi and I share a similar taste in women. Whatever I have, he wants, whatever he has, I want, and so it goes."

"Okay, weird..." You whispered back. "I don't care?"

"You shared some intimacies with Bill, no? I think you and I could have some fun... And that means that Legoshi has some interest in you as well. Even if he's focused elsewhere at the moment."

"You're engaged." You spoke openly.

"Yes. It's what is expected of me." Louis' face hardened. "We are not in a relationship currently, however."

"Do you think mixed species couples ever really make it past high school?" You laid your head in your hand. Louis felt some sympathy for you. He had wished many times that such a thing was common place. He stroked your mane and pulled your head to his thigh. "You don't owe me anything for helping you. You probably didn't even need it..."

"You don't want--"

"I'm not interested in any animal at the moment." You rubbed your nose against Louis' shorts, making your way to his thin fur. Louis shivered in return. He relished the feeling of being out of control. This was a carnivore, however inconsequential, that was showing him some affection. So why did it make him feel this way? "Does San really tell you all the garbage that Pina tells him about me?"

Louis scratched behind your ears as he spoke. "Yes. If I ask."

"I don't mean to be so intimate with people I don't know..." You held your tail in your hands. "Everyone just ends up like this with me..."

"It's strange." Louis took your tail and began running his fingers through the soft hairs. "You protected me, but really I just want to protect your feelings. How do you do that to animals? To Bill... Pina... Dom... Fudge... Kibi... Els... Ellen... San... Sheila... even Juno made no move to attack you.How do you make us all care about you so easily?"

"Bill thinks I'm innocent. Pina calls me self-sacrificing. Dom, Fudge and Kibi probably think I'm pathetic in a cute way since I'm so easy to tease. Els and Ellen believe that I'm kind. San sees how I protect my friends. Sheila and Juno... well I can't speak for them, but they probably think of me as a little pest. Like a little sister that they can't hurt."

"I've been seeing a little white dwarf rabbit. Haru, is her name. The same one Legoshi is interested in." Louis' voice was barely a whisper. "We all want to protect her, in an instinctive way. But you're not like that."

"I'm not her."

"You're your own genus. And it shows."

Suddenly, for the first time since you had walked into this room, you made direct eye contact with Louis.

"You have doe eyes..." Louis had a very blank look on his face, not wanting to show his true feelings. "Not like the other canids."

"My mother calls them predatory." You sighed and looked away, but Louis quickly caught your chin and brought you to his face.

"You are not even close to predatory." He looked you in your eyes. "I am so much more dangerous than you."
