53: Grow Up

"Sir... Why... are you only telling me this...?" Louis looked naive and he hated it. But he truly didn't understand his role.

"You're the stag who represents the Cherryton School. You shouldn't be going soft now of all times." The mayor turned and faced him head on. "You need to grow up and learn about the world. When you  finally become a Beastar, you'll have to deal with the Shishigumi eventually. The girl who was abducted, she was from your club, right? You're friends with her?" Louis' hands gripped tightly. "Well, it doesn't matter."

"J-Just concealing the problem, won't solve it! There has to be something we can do!" The red deer was irate. Grow up? GROW UP!? If the kidnap of a student is just a minor problem to grown ups, then I hope to stay a child. "It-it doesn't matter what you tell the people; it was still a lion who abducted her. You won't change a single thing about the problems this city faces."

"Yes, you're exactly right. Good thinking." Louis felt the intimidation from the large predator. "But easily accessible information is extremely vital to the people. I want you to agree with me that we must never let this leak to this public."

Just let her go?... The thought disgusts me.

"You see," the clawed paw was extended to him for agreement. "Right after I graduated university, I removed my fangs and started to wear dentures. I've also spent around the figure of four hundred thousand dollars to have surgical procedures on my face; all to look friendly and presentable. I have worked to the bone for many years to put lions in a good light." The tone of voice went from matter-of -fact to extremely personal. "If this leaks to the public, all of my efforts will go to waste. And if this city falls into chaos then, do you think I'll be able to fix it? Not as a lion." The black eyes of the predator ran Louis' blood cold. "Consider this your final ordeal. You have to leave this incident behind and end the meteor festival on good terms. If you do, I'll reward you handsomely. I will clear away that troublesome past of yours." Louis felt a dreadful aura. How could he make this choice? "Your profile is still in the black market's catalogue. I can easily get rid of it. What do you say?"

My past... erased... if I only forget a girl who didn't even like me... Louis' hand shakily reached out.

"GOOD!" The mayor shook it ecstatically. "It's a deal! There's no turning back." The voice was happy, but the hand shake was crushing his bones. "We have nothing more to discuss. You are free to go back to your little drama club."

Louis felt the fury at himself and at the mayor for making such a dark agreement.

"Mayor..." Louis spoke to the door in front of him. "Even if you take away your fangs and change your face, you are still a lion. Just like the others."

"I'm not glad to heat that, but I'll accept it as a compliment."

And with that, Louis walked back towards Cherryton, fate accepted.
