"Did I hear a little wolf has a crush?" A deep voice rolled over you and suddenly your friends stepped back with a shiver. "Aw, don't leave me out."
"Bill, I might have apologized for demonizing carnivores, but I'm still not comfortable with you in my personal bubble." Ellen put on a brave front, but you could tell she was nervous.
So you stepped up to protect your friends.
"Please be mindful." You puffed out your chest and smiled at the large tiger.
"Oh?" He crouched down to your level. "Of what, little wolf?"
"First, I'm not a wolf. I'm a maned wolf. I'm in my own genus, thank you. Second, please be mindful of how intimidating you might be to other people. We don't have any intention of leaving you out of this humiliating conversation, but I wouldn't like if any of my friends were uncomfortable. Herbivore or carnivore." Your voice came out bravely and you felt proud of yourself.
"I don't see any carnivores but us two." Bill raised an eyebrow. "Don't you have any fanged friends?"
"She doesn't need them." Pina put his arm back around you and lowered his horns just a bit. "Although, we will definitely return to the fanged crush."
Bill paused for a minute and then sat down.
"Okay, I give. Sorry if I was being intimidated. But I am genuinely curious about you. I think I felt," Bill winked at you, causing you to blush, "a little jealous."
"It's you." You blurted out, rushing to hide your true feelings from this manipulative tiger. "I asked if anyone knew more about you. That's NOT a crush, but I only know you from yesterday and that's maybe not the best impression."
Ellen raised her eye at you but shrugged and pulled Els away, sensing this conversation was going to head elsewhere. Pina lingered.
"She doesn't need a guard sheep, Pina the player." Bill teased. "She's got the main source of information right here."
Pina looked at Bill suspiciously and leaned towards you. "If you're ever uncomfortable... or whatever... I'll be over with the girls." And with that, he retreated.
"I've seen you around." Bill spoke and patted the spot next to him. "You're no large predator, but it's not often you see a carnivore of any type with a flock around them."
"Not where I grew up..." You avoided eye contact.
"Tell me... were you the only carnivore where you grew up?"
"No."
"Were there any large carnivores?"
"Why does that matter..." your voice came out more as a whisper.
"I just wondered how experienced you were with your own kind."
"I'm not a carnivore."
"And I'm not a blood thirsty beast." Bill leaned forward and dropped his voice. "But we all have something deep inside of us that we wish wasn't there."
Your body shivered and you weren't sure if it was in fear or something else. Bill, however, stood up and stretched out his back.
"There's a reason that we stick together." Bill mentioned, tapping the point of your fang that sat outside your lip. "I'm flattered you would say you want to know more about me... But if you're interested in a certain actual wolf... I've got information about him as well. Drop by the Panthera room sometime. We can hang."
And with a deep exhale, you turned to find your friends.
