"I'm sorry. Maybe I shouldn't have given you Tem's love letter..." Legoshi's deep voice caused your ears to prick up. You still hadn't decided whether or not to go back to your quiet room or to stroll around campus more. So, you ended up eavesdropping on your friend and the admittedly awkward stranger.
"But it would have been hard to pretend that you didn't know about it..." Els's quiet voice contrasted Legoshi's.
"Yeah... I thought Tem wouldn't want anyone else to find out. So I wanted to give it to you in private."
"I see..." Els's scent easily carried to you with the wind. "You're awkward, but sweet. You frightened me, but I'm grateful. If I'm honest with you, Tem and I... we were close. Probably closer than friends. I'll treasure this letter."
Your face was wet with tears for Tem. It had hardly set in that you would never see your friend again.
"I'm sorry I frightened you. I try not to..." The two walked closer to you, still not acknowledging your presence. "I'll see you at practice tomorrow."
"Yeah... see you..." Els began heading away from you, towards the herbivore dorms. "Um, hey... I said some terrible things about you and carnivores today in the locker room... I'll take it all back tomorrow in front of everyone. I hope you can forgive me."
"Oh? You don't need to do that..." Legoshi had stood staight as he walked away, but hunched over imemdiately to talk to Els.
"W-Why not? I think I hurt a lot of people's feelings..."
"Don't tell anyone about tonight. I don't want anyone to know about Tem's first love. That was his and your business alone. It's too bad I had to interfere at all..."
"B-But, I don't want the other drama club members to misunderstand you. Or to think that I really do hate carnivores..."
"I'll be fine. It's always been like this. I'm a large carnivore. I'm used to being feared and hated. I will survive."
His words were brave, but his stance betrayed his feelings. He felt helpless.
Must be difficult for the largest Carnivora Canidae in the world... You thought as you pulled your legs up to your chin. He's probably not used to that feeling.
But you were wrong about Legoshi. He was not a large carnivore who enjoyed taking charge; he was a sensitive soul with a low voice and a love for tragedies, insects and pacifism.
Perhaps you had your own biases about carnivores and herbivores, being neither and not knowing the experiences of either. However, at that moment, you made a mental note that there was something you wanted to get to know more about. And Legoshi was going to be a part of that.
Eventually, the air got chilly, even for your thick fur. You shook your mind free of these thoughts and stood up tall-- at least tall for you. Maned wolves weren't known for their strength, size or stealth. You wondered if there were any biases that people had of maned wolves, but figured that there weren't quite enough of them for that to be true.
I'll have to settle for having load of misconceptions... As if that isn't enough trouble.
