Chapter 29: Recovery, Despair, And Heartbroken

Again, the room went to silence. Neither of you moved, nor did you both speak. You were confused at why Levi didn't answer your question. [ Didn't the Scouting Regiment have a proper burial ceremony for the fallen soldiers?] " What did you say?" Levi asked hoarsely. " What happened to the bodies from the previous expedition?" Levi turned back towards the doorway, his back facing you. " We had to dump their bodies from the cart. None of them made it back within the walls." You heard your heart shatter into a million pieces. Everybody that risked their lives on that expedition... were dumped? " What about Petra, Erd, Oulo, and Gunther?" " They... were dumped also. (Your name), never speak of that expedition ever again." " Le-" " I said never!" Levi yelled. You shrinked back and your hair covered your face. Without another word, Levi left. You felt hollow and your calmness diminishes. " They deserve a proper burial place. I-I don't care if I am sick! I am going to retrieve their deceased corpses." Slowly, you got up with the help of a chair besides your bed and walked to the doorway. 

As you walked into the stables, your walking progress started to get better. You climbed onto the stallion and saddled on. Then, you and the horse ran off.

" I think the area was right around here." You had galloped into the middle of the field, near the Evergreen Forest. You could tell that you wrapped up and wearing their uniform. " There!" You pointed out. Up ahead was a certain wrapped up corpse with orange hair peering out. Gently, you pulled back on the reins and the horse halted to a stop. You unsaddled yourself from the horse and walked towards the deceased human being. Bending down on your knees, you peeled off the cloth from her pale face. " Petra." You whispered out. Petra hasn't decomposed yet, however, her eyes were sky grey due to her system shutting down. You shut the hollow eyes close and transformed into your ghoul form. By transforming, you could carry Petra's body and walk off into the forest. Luckily on the way there, you also found Gunther, Oulo, and Erd's bodies. Carrying four bodies into a forest proved to be a challenge since you were sick. However, you managed the task and spotted a secluded tree.

Gently, you aligned the four bodies next to each other and placed their cloaks on each one of them. From a normal point of view, it looks as if the four of them were sleeping right next to each other. You smiled, placing a dandelion on them also. " Rest in peace." You hoped out loud. As you transformed back into your human form, a voice screamed out into the humongous forest. " (Your name)!" " Levi?" You questioned. You sprinted out towards the end of the Evergreen Forest. You could the grass graze along your bare feet. On the outskirts of the forest, you found Levi, Erwin, Hanji, and Eren. " (Your name)!" Eren yelled. You stood frozen in place. Erwin unsaddled himself from his horse and walked towards you. Hanji, Levi, and Eren followed behind afterwards. Erwin stopped in front of you. Then, landed his hands on your shoulders. " (Your name). Why are out here? You were supposed to stay within the walls!" " Tch, dumb ass brat." " We were very worried about you." Hanji said calmly. " Everybody started to wonder where you have gone." Eren stated. You sighed and walked back into the forest. " Where are you going?" Erwin questioned. " I'll show all of you what I have been doing, rather than explaining." You finished.

Walking further down into the forest, everybody's complaints started to rise up. " Where are you taking us (Your name)?" Hanji whined. " Tch, she must have probably just walked around the whole damn forest." " My legs are getting tired." Eren whined also. You twitched your eye in annoyance. However, you ignored their rants and continued leading them to  the open space. Finally, you all arrived at the designated spot. " What the hell is that?" Levi asked. You looked his way and found out that he was referencing the four corpses lined against the tree. " Who are they?" Eren asked frantically. " The brave members of the Levi Squad." " What?" Levi asked. Quickly, Levi walked up to the bunch and stood there. Both his hands formed into fists. " Why?" He asked softly. " It was my fault they died. The least I can do is give them a peaceful burial place." As you finished talking, you clenched onto your fleece white night gown, making ruffles on the attire. Hanji smiled and turned around. " Come on, let's go." Hanji spoke softly. While walking away, Erwin walked up to you. " They lived long-fulfilling lives (Your name). Never forget that." With those words spoken, both Eren and Erwin left. Yourself and Levi were the only ones staying in place. 

Quietly, you strode up to the man. Levi knelt down and kept on looking at the corpses. " Levi." You called out quietly. " You will never understand what I went through with them. I was the one that let them down. Now, they're dead." You sunk your shoulders down and sighed. " Levi. Come with me. I want to show you something." Hesitantly, Levi stood up. You took his right hand into your small, fragile ones and dragged him over to the deeper side of the forest. 

" Where the hell are you taking me brat?" " I want you to meet two very special people in my life." You both have been walking for five solid minutes. Until, you spotted a familiar white shrine on a tree about 15 meters away. Quickly, you walked faster towards the tree. " Oi!" Levi announced. You both stopped in front of the sacred tree. " A damn tree? You made me walk five consequent  minutes for a plant?!" Before Levi could complain further, you stopped the rude man from doing so. " This is the place where I buried my parents when they died. This so called '' dumb tree'', is important to me." Levi shut his mouth and touched the ancient Oak. As if talking to the tree itself. " I may not know how it feels to lose your comrades in battle, but I do know what it feels like when you lose your loved ones." You knelt down on the patched up ground and clapped your hands together. " What are you doing?" " I'm praying to make sure that my parents are watching over me." Levi landed his hand on the top of your head, ruffling your hair. " Trust me brat. They already are." You tilted your head in confusion while Levi smiled.
