"Boo!" Keefe shouted, grabbing her shoulder.
"Ah!" Sophie screamed. "Not cool!" Sophie heard a snicker in response. She couldn't tell if it was Tam or Keefe, since it was pitch black. She was glad though that none of them could see her face red with embarrassment.
Sophie used the ground to push herself up. She didn't take any steps, afraid she would stumble down the staircase. "So, now what do we do? There is like no light," Sophie pointed out.
"I didn't know that!" She heard Keefe's voice say sarcastically.
"Shut up!" Another snicker was followed.
Sophie really needed to learn how to not get annoyed when it came to Keefe.
"Guys, we didn't think this through," Tam said, followed by a shuffle as if he just got up.
Sophie sighed. "Yeah, I guess not. Maybe we should feel the wall that opened up and maybe we will find out how to open it back up," Sophie suggested.
"And just leave this secret place we just discovered? No way, I'm not leaving until we investigate," Keefe whined.
"But it could be dangerous," Sophie argued.
"I. Don't. Care."
Stubborn rat!
"Suit yourself dude. I'm leaving!" Tam said, as she heard him start to pat the wall.
"Why? Are you scared?" Keefe teased.
"No! I actually love the darkness, it's just that I don't want to die along with you!" Tam snapped.
Keefe scoffed. "Sophie, did you just hear what Bangs Boy said? I think we should shove him down the staircase!"
Sophie stifled a giggle. "No, Keefe! I will not take part in your childish fights with Tam, much less murder him."
"THIS IS NOT CHILDISH! THE CREEPO WANTS TO SHOVE ME DOWN THE STAIRCASE OF DOOM! THIS IS A SERIOUS MATTER!" Tam shouted.
"Easy dude, you'll wake up the dead," Keefe said.
"I already have before," Tam said in a ghostly whisper.
"Um, okay...back to trying not to die, any ideas?" Sophie asked, trying not to think about Tam's previous comment.
"I guess we can feel along the wall as we slowly walk down the staircase," Keefe suggested.
"I guess that will have to work," Sophie said.
"I call last!" Tam declared.
Sophie could imagine Keefe doing an eye roll. "Fine, I call first then, so Tam can't shove me down the stairs!" Keefe said.
"Dang it!" Tam mumbled. Sophie snickered.
This would be an interesting journey.
Without another word, they used each other and the wall to help themselves to get into a single file line as they slowly made their way down. Step by step.
Sophie shivered from the cold and dampness. She would jump a little whenever there was a drop of water that fell onto her head. She also shivered because she was afraid. Being in the dark meant that you were vulnerable and the enemy could pounce at any time. She really wished that she had someone's hand to squeeze onto, but she didn't want to look like a coward. Besides, she was sure Tam wouldn't want to hold her hand and she couldn't hold Keefe's hand, since Tam was there.
When it felt like forever, she started to count the steps. That made time seem to go slower though.
At step 74, Keefe asked, "do you guys want to play a game?"
