A whole week had passed since Dex's leg amputation so therefore, Sophie and her friends were allowed to visit him.
School had ended that day, so Marella and Sophie immediately went straight to visit Dex. The other friends all had other things to do and said that they would visit Dex when they could.
Sophie and Marella rushed to the hospital as fast as they could and ran straight to Dex's room after getting instructions from a few nurses.
Sophie's heart pounded as she and Marella stood right outside Dex's door. Sophie bit her lip and turned to face Marella. "So...do you want to go in together or...?"
Marella nervously tugged one of the braids in her hair. "Um can we each go in separately?"
"Um yeah, of course. So who will go first?" Sophie asked.
"Can I go first?" Marella asked.
"Sure," Sophie agreed as she saw Marella go into Dex's room.
Marella's P.O.V
"Dex?" Marella called, feeling nerves flood throughout her body as she walked into Dex's hospital room.
"Marella," Dex croaked from where he was laying in his hospital bed.
Marella sucked in a breath as she made her way over to him and sat on the edge of his bed. She took a second to study Dex. His strawberry blonde hair was spiking in all different directions and his eyes looked swollen with dark circles under them. He looked exhausted.
"I missed you so much," Marella whispered, grabbing ahold of the hand he reached out towards her.
"I missed you too," Dex whispered back, his cheeks flushing.
After a pause, Marella asked, "so how are you doing?"
Dex sighed and looked away. "I'm really frustrated actually. I've been cooped up in this boring room for a whole week without even seeing anyone."
"Aw, that's okay. At least people can visit you now," Marella said.
Dex looked back at her. "Yeah, my parents already visited me this morning."
"How was it?" Marella asked.
"It was good but also strange. Like all this time here, I didn't realize how much I missed my family. Like—lots of times I'd get so annoyed of my family and just wish for a break from them. In general, I always felt lonely so I didn't really think that being alone here would make a difference...but it was terrible. I actually missed hearing all the arguing from my triplets and my annoying parents. It felt like the Neverseen was taking so much away from me and I know I should be grateful. Like I don't even have it that bad—Sophie's biological parents were killed and here I am complaining. I feel so selfish," Dex explained.
"Dex, you aren't selfish. You're allowed to feel this way. And it's not about who has it worse—it's just the fact that we are all struggling in our own ways. It's about understanding each other and never leaving anyone out. Because we are all struggling, that's the reason why we need to come together and pick each other up," Marella said, surprised by the words that were coming out of her mouth but also feeling that they were right.
Man she was getting really deep!
"I guess...but I still feel pretty lonely," Dex muttered.
"Oh Dex! C'mon! You have me and if that's not enough...then I'll figure out a way to make it enough," Marella said, feeling confident.
Dex have her a small smile then sent foreign flutters in Marella's heart. "Thanks Marella," Dex said. "But...will you still even care about me when I'm like this?" Dex asked as he motioned for her to move over. He then lifted up the covers to reveal that the bottom half of one of his legs was missing. A cast wrapped around what was left of the leg.
