Chapter 96: Mess

Sophie cradled herself from where she was sobbing as she sat on the ground of the forest outside the cabin.

Sophie sobbed uncontrollably and no matter how many times she wiped her eyes, more tears replaced them.

Sophie saw that Edaline was talking to someone urgently on the phone—probably Grady. Sophie also saw several cops moving around the area and in the cabin.

Sophie sobbed as she saw the medics carry a dead Jensi and his dead grandparents over to the ambulances.

Sophie noticed a lock of Jensi's curly hair peak out of the white sheet that covered his dead body.

She'll never see Jensi again—never.

And it was all her fault.

The poor kid was the first person to ever help Sophie when she was new to Foxfire. He didn't care if she was a freak or not. He was always friendly and kind to Sophie and she never acknowledged him like she should have.

Jensi was even the person to save Dex. If he hadn't pulled Dex out of that river that day...Dex would have been dead.

Then when Sophie, Tam, and Stina could have died last night, Jensi was there to save them. Sophie just came banging on Jensi's cabin, asking for Jensi to keep them safe. Jensi could have said no given that he barely knows Sophie. But he still accepted them.

He should have said no.

And what did Jensi get for helping Sophie and her friends?

Nothing.

Oh wait! He did get something—death.

So this is what people got? Was this how life worked?

It was how the Neverseen worked.

But regardless, it was still Sophie's fault. She's the reason that Jensi can't live to see another day. This is what Sophie and other innocent people get when she drags them in her mess.

Sophie needed to stop doing that.

This also made Sophie wonder, Sophie technically dragged some of her other friends in her mess and the Neverseen never killed them.

Like, Tam, Linh, Stina, and Wylie were obviously involved so they had no choice. But the others? They were just helping to be good friends but...that was dangerous...

Sophie's mind immediately flashed to the day she was at the theatre and what the stalker said.

I need you to stop falling for that Nick boy—even Keefe, he said.

Don't worry, I'll take care of him.

Nothing for you to worry right now, babe.

Sophie trembled as the stalker's words played in her head.

The stalker said he'd would take care of any guys that went after Sophie.

The stalker was going to kill Nick...

Could any of Sophie's friends be next?

Any one of them could get murdered, but then again, why hadn't the Neverseen killed them already? Unless the Neverseen were waiting...

But for what?

So many questions filled Sophie's head but she put them for the "deal with later" section in her mind. Right now she was too busy crying and hating herself.

Sophie felt so numb knowing she was the cause of this whole mess.

Sophie's real parents wanted Sophie to be someone she couldn't be.
