"NOOOOO!" Marella screamed, collapsing to the ground.
Sophie started to sob as she cradled her body on the ground. From physical pain and the pain of seeing her best friend go.
He couldn't be gone. He had to stay. He had to be strong.
Sophie looked up and saw Marella get up and start to walk towards the river.
She was going to jump in.
"MARELLA! Stop!" Sophie yelled, running over to stop her.
Sophie managed to grab Marella by the shoulders before she jumped.
"Let me go!" Marella snapped, trying to wrestle out of Sophie's grip.
"Marella, stop! There's nothing you can do," Sophie choked out, tears leaking down her face.
Marella turned to face Sophie, her eyes pooling with tears. "There has to be a way," Marella whispered.
Sophie sobbed. "We have to wait for help. Maybe he can be saved."
Marella started to sob too and pulled Sophie into a tight hug. She squeezed tight as if she needed someone to hold on to to keep herself together. "He didn't deserve this," Marella whispered, shivering.
"I know, I know," Sophie mumbled into Marella's hair.
Neither did Edaline.
Neither did Linh and Mr. Forkle.
Neither did Sophie's parents.
Neither did anyone.
Marella pulled away and held on tight to Sophie's hands. "How could the Neverseen do this? How can they not have a heart?" Marella asked.
Sophie shook her head and wiped her eyes.
How could anyone be so cruel?
Was the project the Neverseen wanted worth the sacrifice?
No...not at all.
And this was all Sophie's fault.
Suddenly, sirens filled the air, causing Marella and Sophie to gasp. "Help is here!" Sophie exclaimed.
They turned to face the forest and heard the sirens get closer. "HERE! WE'RE HERE!" Sophie and Marella yelled out.
Within seconds, an army of policemen came towards them with ambulances following them.
"Don't worry girls! Help is here!" A policeman said. Sophie felt tears of joy fill her eyes.
There was hope.
An ambulance pulled up close and opened its back doors. The medics then came towards Marella and Sophie.
"Wait—don't take me away!" Sophie exclaimed.
"It's going to be fine," a medic said.
"No! Please! I'm not going anywhere until everyone is found and safe," Sophie said, crossing her arms.
"Me too!" Marella agreed. The medics exchanged glances and sighed.
The policeman then asked, "can you tell us where everyone is?"
"Well—back there, a few of our friends are on the ground unconscious. They were in the river for a while and I don't know if they're okay," Sophie stuttered.
The policeman then signaled people to go and find them. "There's also Linh! She's back where the bridge exploded," Marella added.
"We know, the ambulance have already taken her and Mr. Forkle away," the policeman said.
