Chapter 33

DIMITRI

We rushed into the SUV with Rose giving instructions on where to go. Her bond with Lissa was beneficial at this moment as she was able to take a peek into her mind and relay the information of her whereabouts to us. As Rose visited Lissa, the car was silent as I continued to drive as fast as possible. Just then, an earth-shattering scream rattled the car. I jerked in surprise and made us veer. I began to pull over when Rose stopped me.

"No, no! Keep going!" she pressed her palms to her temples, "we have to get there!"

I wanted to stop the car right there and check up on her, but I knew to her, making sure her best friend was safe was more important than her own wellbeing.

"Rose, what's happening?" Alberta said whilst reaching forward and resting her hand and on Rose's shoulder. I was concerned, and all I wanted was to look at her, but I knew if I did that, I would not be able to take it. I would pull over and embrace her; I could not take seeing her upset.

"They're torturing her...with air. This guy...Kenneth...he's making it press against her... into her head. The pressure's insane, and it feels like my--her-- skull's gonna explode." Rose sobbed.

I stepped on the gas pedal harder; it was clear to me that Victor capturing Lissa was not only a scare tactic but a motive to kill, and every second was crucial. I needed to ensure her safety, not only for Rose but also to keep the royal blood alive. Despite her pain, Rose pushed herself back into Lissa's head.

As we neared the cabin, Alberta made a call on her cellphone, and the entire convoy pulled over. All of the guardians got out and stood huddled a bit away from the black SUV. As the sun had begun to come out, we planned on hiding behind the trees and moving along the shadows. Four or five guardians guard the doors and windows while the rest circled the cabin to prevent anyone from escaping. Guardian Grill scouted the area and returned to report on the number of people inside and outside the cabin. When the group was gearing to disperse, Rose began to get out of the car. Seeing the determination in her eyes and the tense muscles under the jacket I had given her made me stop her. This was too dangerous.

"No, Roza. You stay here."

"The hell with that. I have to go help her," she said with great determination.

I knew Rose, she was a determined and fierce warrior, and I also knew that the only thing that could stop her was understanding. I needed to show her that I understood her thought process. I cupped her chin with my hands affectionately, fixing her eyes with mine.

"Roza, you have helped her; your job is done. You did it well, but this isn't any place for you. She and I both need you to stay safe."

She nodded with a hint of understanding in her eyes. I nodded back, relieved that she had understood. The guardians moved swiftly through the shadows of the trees. We remained silent, with the only sound coming from our padded feet. Alberta and I led the teams as we split off into two teams - with mine going around to circle the cabin at a safe distance. I broke them into fourths and brought three with me as we blocked the windows and back door. As I glanced around me, I saw that Alberta's team had already finished circling the cabin, and she made eye contact with me and nodded; I knew she was ready to infiltrate, and I nodded back.

I kicked the door, and splintered wood sprayed out in front of me. Just as I stepped in, I heard sounds of wood cracking and windows breaking. I knew my team had managed to get in. A guardian sitting on the chair stood up and looked at me with a glazed look in his eyes. At that moment, I knew what was happening, he had been compelled, and there was only one person capable of doing so.

As he lunged at me, my Dhampir instincts kicked in, and I moved swiftly out of his way. I turned around and grabbed him by the shirt, and threw him down. He tried to escape my hold, but I was too strong. He spat out a string of cuss words as one of the guardians that had been with me took hold of him. I nodded in thanks and kept going through the cabin. The scene before me was astonishing. Moroi and Dhampirs fought, not together but against each other. Although there were more of us, guardians fell one by one as elements shot through the air. I grabbed a Moroi by the throat and slammed him against the wall. He looked shocked by my fast reflexes. It felt quite oxymoronic. Our whole purpose as guardians is to protect Moroi, but here we were killing or harming them. It was rather strange.

I made my way through the house with only one goal in mind, get Victor. I didn't get far before I spotted him leaning against the wall, looking healthy and strong. A team of compelled guardians protected him from my team. A guardian, my height leapt at me, but he was not as swift as I was. I moved out of his outstretched hands just in time to slam into the other guardian, who gripped me hard and threw me against the wall. This one was just as strong as I was, his eyes steaming with anger as he repeatedly slammed me into the wall.

With one long leg, I kicked him in the shin. As he cried out in pain and bent over, I knew this was my opening. I slammed my elbow down and made hard contact with his head. He went down. I made my way to Victor.

Victor smiled at me as I approached him. "Belikov, I hadn't expected you to be here so soon. I was sure you would be occupied for the whole night considering-"

I didn't allow him to finish talking as I slammed my body into him. He went down, and I grabbed his hair, pulling his face back. "You're a bastard, don't think for one moment that I wouldn't kill you right here and now."

He sneered as if he had the upper hand. "Go ahead and kill me, a Moroi. It would do us all good; you'd be sent to jail and never let out again." He cocked his head to the side. "I wonder what would happen if you were unable to see Rose for the rest of your life, and if you were ever granted that opportunity, there would be a barrier between you. His smile turned into a cocky smirk as he glared at me. "It'll be difficult to have sex with her when you have those metal bars between you."

He was right, I could not kill him, but I could do something else instead. I grabbed him by the ear and pulled him up to his feet. I lifted him by the neck, letting his feet dangle freely in the air. I brought him to the ground and flipped him over. I grabbed my handcuffs and snapped them on his wrists. I pulled him up off the floor and slammed him into the coffee table. Guardian Griff came and took a bloodied and bruised Victor with him.

I walked out of the house and into the sunlight as I refused to take a look at the bodies of guardians lying on the floor.
