The following day:
Maya rushed to get home. Early in the day she was finally discharged from the hospital the only reason why she didn't leave right away was because she wanted to make sure her daughter was straight. Finally on the floor of her apartment, she braced herself before walking in. Immediately, walking in the foul smell of old blood and the faint smell of bleach filled the room. She must of forgot to clean up after Carter decided to do a "pop up". The only reason she was at home instead of the hospital was because she needed a break from everything. And she also wanted to check through Kailyn's things. Yeah she knew she was probably wrong for "snooping", but that was her daughter and from the circumstances she had reasons.
*Flashback:
When she was in the hospital she had already called Detective Anderson to set up an appointment. Making a face at a new nurse that had came to give her breakfast. She knew that this hospital was trying to kill somebody with their "dog food". She didn't want any parts. Deciding to skip breakfast, she realized it was about time to have a conversation with the detective who she met. Grabbing his card off the table, she dialed the number.
"This is Atlanta's Bureau. Do you have an appointment, scheduling one, or need to talk to someone about a case," asked an unknown individual.
"Um... I'm not sure, My name is Maya-"
Before she could finish the receptionist already was aware of who she was prior to her calling. The detective gave specific details on how to handle the case, "Yes, Mrs. Monroe...Detective Anderson has been expecting your call."
Maya scrunched up her nose thinking that it was weird that the lady knew who she was, "Well can you tell him that I'm ready to talk and I'll come by sometime or another. Most likely once I get out this hospital."
"Very well, Mrs. Monroe. I'll notify him about your request.
*End of Flashback
As Maya tried to clear up the mess in the apartment, there was a knock at the door. She was confused because she wasn't expecting anyone. She was just praying that it wasn't Carter. Opening the door she was met with the same pair of grayish black eyes. The tall light-skinned man with a bright smile, but this time instead of wearing a grey suit, he was wearing all black. Maya was at a lost for words, but she didn't show it.
"Hello, Mrs. Monroe. My assistant said you called and said that you're ready to talk?" he said, looking Maya up and down. Maya could feel his eyes but chose to ignore it because she was still confused as to why he was there.
"How? I mean I thought I was suppose to come down to your office?"
"Oh my fault. I went to the hospital to check on you, but they said you were home. And you know I'm a detective, so I can pull up everyone's information. I guess I should've called and checked first. My apoligizies." The two continued to stare at each other until their surroundings of outside became clear.
Maya opened the door fully forgetting about why he was actually there, "I'm sorry, come on in. Also, sorry for the mess. I haven't had the chance to clean everything up."
The detective waved her off, "There isn't nothing to be sorry for. You got more important stuff to worry about and besides I showed up all unannounced. I just thought you would feel more comfortable here then my office. But I'm only going to ask a few questions."
She sat down at the kitchen table since it was the only place in the apartment that wasn't consumed with the day Kailyn tried to kill herself. The detective followed suit with taking a seat at the table directly across from Mrs. Monroe.
"Maybe we can start with Kailyn's personal life. Did she hang around anyone that you know of?" he asked, grabbing a notepad from his jacket.
"Well detecive," the detective eyed her then suddenly she remembered what he asked of her about his name, "Sorry Kyle...umm knowing my daughter, I doubt it. She's a very closed off person. Plus, we just moved here not too long ago."
"How about a change in behavior like the last couple of days prior to her attempt?"
Maya played with her fingers feeling ashamed that she didn't have the answers to his question. She slowly began to sob, "I don't know. I literally just came back from Virginia when I walked in on her on the balancy. I didn't even talk to her barely during the time I was gone. I'm such a bad mom. How could I not know what was going through my daughters head?"
Kyle nervously grabbed Maya's hands that she had constantly picked with, "I know my words probably don't mean much but it's not your fault. There's always much more than someone not being there. Take it form me, been there done that," he faked laughed, "But at least Kailyn made it. In the meantime, I think we covered enough for today. Tomorrow my boss and I will be going down to Kailyn's school for questioning. I'll call you if we find anything." he said, standing looking back at Maya before walking out the apartment.
Maya nodded as he left and continued to cry softly. She wanted to hold onto his words 'it's not your fault' because she had a feeling that she was partially to blame.
...
Kailyn was back in her hospital room thinking about her conversation she had with Marcus from the previous night. She still thought the whole thing was strange. Her thoughts were cut off by her mother coming into the room with multiple balloons and a stuffed bear in both her hands.
"My Kai is finally up," she smiled, placing the stuff she bought down then took a seat next to Kailyn.
Kailyn thought that she owed her mom an apology. "Mom I-"
"Let's not talk about that right now. Let's just focus on this moment us both living and breathing."
Kailyn was prepared to continue but right on cue Dr. McCall walked into the room, which just changed Kailyn's mood.
"I guess since you're both here we can finally discuss what's happening with Kailyn. As we all know right now Kailyn shot herself twice, and the wounds are still healing. As of now they're healing properly. After we cleared out her system from all the drugs she took, she's very weak so as of now we're keeping an eye on her to make sure her immune system gets back up," he stopped to glance at Kailyn, which she noticed. Trying to seem unfazed and that bothered him making him irritated. "Her body is weak and as long as she's weak her recovering will take time."
"How much longer is she going to have to be here?" Maya asked rising from her seat.
"Not sure yet."
"Well as long as she's good then alright. I left something in my car, so I'll be back." Maya left the room leaving Marcus and Kailyn alone.
"Why are like that?" Marcus rolled his eyes standing directly in front of Kailyn.
"Like what?"
"Like you have no care in the world. I'm here telling you that you're not okay and what do you, brush it off."
Maya folded her arms angrily staring at him, "What do you want from me? You want me to cry and be sad. Guess what I already pulled the trigger, deal with it."
"You don't even hear how dumb you sound. So ungrateful for no reason."
"Well goodbye. You don't like it call in for another doctor. I'm cool with that, then I won't have to see your ugly face."
"Girl please, nothing about me is ugly. Besides you're not getting off that easily with another doctor. You'll miss me too much," he said sarcastically. "But I'm going to let you be petty because your observation is now."
He then checked his watch and made his way towards the door.
"Marcus, don't you dare," he continued to walk in the direction he was going. "I mean it...Marcus! Marcus! Marcus McCall! I know you hear me."
"Huh? What you say? I can't you hear you!" he laughed, making his way out of the room.
