Fifteen Mintues Later:
"What are you doing here? Andwhy aren't you at school?" asked Mr. Andy sitting down in his office.
I had to leave school because I was too embarassed. I haven't had a breakdown like that in years and I wasn't expecting it. This time when I say I'm fully over Bianca and her shenanigans, I mean it.
"I had to leave school, so I figured why not come to work early," I half lied.
The truth was I couldn't stand the sight of people at school and I didn't want to go home to an empty apartment. So why not come in to work and earn some more money. Mr. Andy eyed me slowly while taking a sip of his coffee.
"Mhmm. Tell me this, does your mom know you're here?" I look down. "That's what I thought."
"It's not a problem. She's back in Virginia anyway so it doesn't matter."
"When this dishes out it's all on you. I'm not your parent so I can't tell you what to do. I do think you should at least tell her your where abouts, but whatever go help Jessica clear tables. Afterwards go take some orders."
I left out his office and decide to follow his advice and send mom a text. Later putting my phone on silent trying to avoid one of her many lectures. Then put on my apron and change into my black and white Vans.
"Hey girly. Can you get table number five for me?" asked Jessica as she helped another table.
"No problem," I held onto the menu making my way to the table.
"Here's a menu. Let me know when you're ready."
Today I wasn't in the mood for my full introduction that I normally give the customers. I just need something to get my mind off these flashbacks and Bianca.
"No need. I'll just take some fries." a voice spoke. Sort of sounding familiar.
"Ok I can get that for you. If you need anything just ask for Kailyn." I say walking to put the order in.
"Wait up! Kailyn? As in Kailyn Monroe?" I turn around confused as to where I know this girl from.
"Yeah that's me."
"It's me Kai. Tiff your bff from elementary up until middle school," said the girl I once I knew.
Now her hair was cut into a short bob dyed brown. Her eyes are hidden behind her thick glasses. I haven't seen her in years. Tiffany and I used to be neighbors when donor, mom, and I Iived in Virginia.
She was the only friend that I ever had. I remember days that her parents would argue and I would stay over hers if donor and mom fought. Honestly her house was my second home since my parents did more of the arguing. There's so much that I want to ask but I just don't know how. The very last day I saw her was the night before she moved. Her parents had an arguement that night and she wasn't allowed to come over.
My last memory of her was a note she left me telling me goodbye. I think I even still have it somewhere tuck between something. I didn't even get to say my last goodbye and here I am right here in front of the only person who I ever felt I could trust to tell everything to but I still have no words to say.
"Is that really you, Tiffany?" I question barely recognizing her.
She smiled. "Yup it's me. How have you been? It's been like three years since I've seen you."
"I'm good just moved out here not to long ago. What are you doing here?"
Before she could answer Mr. Andy stood beside me watching both Tiffany and me.
"Kailyn Monore I don't pay you to talk," he jokingly responded.
"My bad Mr. Andy. I was actually catching up with someone I knew from Virginia but no worries here I come. Oh and my bad. Mr. Andy this was my childhood friend Tiffany and Tiffany this is my lovely old boss Mr. Andy the owner of the shop."
The two exhanged smiles while I tried to get back to work.
"Nonesense you came to work early so take this time to talk to this girl. This is the first time I've actually seen you smile," he said walking away leaving me alone with Tiffany. She shrugged as I take a seat across from her.
"So you actually work here. That's crazy because I've been coming here almost everyday since I moved here three years ago."
I'm shocked that it just so happens that Tiffany moved to the same city as me.
"Why did you leave in the first place?" I ask getting straight to the point and also because I'm still confused.
She hesistantly sighed before continuing, "That night was probably the worse between them two. It was so bad that I was tempted to call the cops. I wanted to go over to your house like normal but he locked me in my room. Later in the night mom unlocked my door with her and her suitcase. She told me that we were leaving him. I begged her to let me leave a note, so when she said ok I felt somewhat better. I didn't want to leave without saying anything. I really want you to know how sorry I am for leaving you when all that stuff was happening but as you already knew my parents were both not capable of being parents." she sighed wiping awaying her tears.
"We left that night and drove for hours to stay with my grandparents who took us in. The rest is history. Mom went to therapy and dad is still in rehab. While I stay with my grandparents. But enough about my miserable life. What's been going on with you?"
I gave her my famous blank stares because I'm still processing everything. I can't believe how much had happened with her and her family.
"Dang Tiff, I'm sorry. But everything is great over here." I said rubbing my face forgetting about my makeup.
As soon as I thought about it Tiffany inspected my face. "Mhmm is that right. You mean to tell me Mrs. and Mr. Monroe are doing just fine and that bruise on your face is none existent."
This is the thing about Tiffany nothing ever gets past her. We all used to call her a mini detective because she always found everything out.
"Are you forgetting that I was your bestfriend? I know when you're holding something back."
I roll my eyes in defeat. I'm so tired of people supposely knowing that I'm keeping something from everyone. It's really starting to aggravate me. They didn't care before so don't care now. Everyone is so worried about my life when I'm getting to the point that I'm no longer worrying about it.
"I need to get back to work but I hope we can catch up soon," I say getting up giving her a side hug. She hugged back while sighing loudly. She could never just let things go.
"Something is up with you Kai. You've changed. "
I turn back to look in her direction I mumble, "I'm glad you know so much about me. Please tell me more since you know so much. If I've changed it wasn't because I chose to. While you were here I was back in Virginia dealing with everything that you left behind. And the only thing up with me is dealing with everyone's bull. That's what's up."
There's nothing else to say because I don't understand how life works. No matter who or where you are, things are never going to go the way you intend for them to go.
