Omniscient POV:
It had been three days since Marcus decided to stop talking to Kailyn. He wanted her to feel the same. The same miserable feeling of not knowing if the person you cared about is okay. Kailyn tried everything including sending a paragraph apologizing to him. She knew that he thought she was just ignoring him just because but that wasn't the case. Every since the day Nurse Jayde confronted her about talking to Marcus, she didn't want anyone else to assume anything. She was only trying to protect him from everyone else's ignorance. But he was so stuck in his feels that he wouldn't even hear her out.
Picking up her phone for the third time of the day she called him just to get sent to voicemail.
"Marcus at this point I'm tired of calling you. I get why you're mad, but you being mad petty. I apologize for ignoring your calls but I didn't want anyone else catching us. Nurse Jayde already thinks that something is up between us. That's the only reason I haven't replied. What other reason would I have there's nothing else for me to do. Can you just answer me back because this is literally my last time calling you," she sighed hanging up.
As she fiddled with her hands while not knowing what to do next, her phone dinged indicating that she received a message. Eagerly she read.
To be honest I don't care for an apology. I probably am being petty but I'm too grown to be playing games with you. If you can't understand how much I care about you and your well being, then I don't want to be apart of whatever this is. You know I got mad love for you but I'm just about to step back from all this. Bye, Kai.
After she re-read the message she couldn't stop crying. She felt like she lost someone who meant so much to her. Over what she didn't know. Eventually she brushed her emotions off doing what she does best ignoring how she felt. She's done it all this time so why not continue the trend. If Marcus wanted to forget all about her, then she wished him the best but she wasn't about to sit down crying like someone had died. She was about to suck up her feelings and carry on with her life. Maybe it was best that they ended whatever they had going on before they were in too deep. Or were they already?
...
In the entrance of the hospital Maya walked into someone when she was barely paying attention.
"Sorry about-"
"No worries girl. I'm on a coffee rush. I'm already on my fourth cup for the day," laughed Nurse Jayde. She was exhausted carrying the load of her job and the other shifts of other nurses.
Maya smiled understanding her pain. Not until recently she finally started back eating at the expense of Kyle forcing food on her.
"Well let me get back to Kailyn to make sure she's good. I'll be glad when she gets better so we can get out this hospital. She's going through so much, but I don't think she knows how to express it," confided Maya sadly.
Nurse Jayde bit her lip trying to not let her big mouth say something she regretted. It wasn't her place to tell Kailyn's business, so she had to keep quiet. But she wouldn't be her if she didn't put her two cents in.
"Kailyn is a strong girl. She's going through stuff but who isn't. Somethings you can't control. It just happens. The only thing you can do is listen and not judge," said Nurse Jayde walking back into the hospital before she said more than what was needed.
Maya watched her feeling that she was trying to warn her about something but she decided to shrug it off.
@ Atlanta Bureau:
"Alright let's get into this. So far in the Monroe case we really don't have anything except for small points. Person A including Marcus McCall aka Dr. McCall, he's twenty-one, born in Virginia and moved to Atlanta three years ago. Not sure how he's connected to Kailyn's attempt but it's fairly odd. Boss man found those photos so we know they had some type of relation. Next we have person B, Carter Monroe. Thirty- four in age. His occupation is currently unknown. His record is beyond clean, so we already know what kind of business he's in. He's connected by blood to Kailyn, so my point in including him into the case is because something just doesn't seem right about him. I need for everyone to check on their whereabouts and get any information on Ms. Monroe on the week before her attempt. You're free to go," dismissed the detective as he led the meeting for his team.
He was close he knew it. So far he already had the photos that his boss gave him transferred into time stamps. Basically giving a timeline from which the photos were developed. That night it was clear that Kailyn was physically harmed. The pictures were black and white but you could still see her bruises clear as day including her busted lip. Sure being in the car with Marcus looking like that made him a suspect but something still wasn't making sense. Thinking about Maya and her story kept replying in his head. Her constant abuse went on for years and no one knew. What if it was a situation consisting of like mother, like daughter?
...
Back @ the hospital:
It was almost midnight Kailyn was asleep, but Maya was up watching her daughter sleep. Something was keeping her from closing her eyes. She had a feeling that something bad was about to happen and no matter how much she tried to shake the feeling off it would return. So instead of sleeping she was thinking. Something was telling her to re read her daughter's suicide note and diary. It was as if her inner soul was guiding her to something.
15 January, 2019
New Year- Comes with new beginnings, new journey's, and new energy, but where is it? Being left with the constant ache of your prints amongst the skin you mirrored up. The constant struggle of fighting you away until I once again lose. You win with your mouth consumed of booze, your twisted words speak ill nonsense as your hands creep onto what you think is your territory. But same old news. When will it all be over? When will the only person who can stop this agony stop this? She's no where to be found. Too afraid to speak her remorse for both you and me but no use to try and fight because it's no use. Just because it's a new year.
*End of last entry
"...Carter you taught me two things in life. One, is that a man isn't worth losing your self respect. Secondly, you taught me the importance of women and their struggle when it comes to you men..."
The thought of her daughter's words made her mind drift off her own life. At a early age she gave up her parents, her teenage years, and self respect and dignity all for a man who would soon become her husband and a constant abuser. She became a young parent resulting in her dropping out of school, not graduating, and getting married early. Throughout all her hardships her greatest gift was her daughter. She was a survivor of many things including being a survivor of abuse and being a victim. Often she wouldn't see things for what they were. She liked to look at everything nonchalantly because the more drama the worse your life would be. Though sometimes her outlook on life got in the way of her common sense.
Her daughter's words related too much to her situation as if she was going through the same. Looking at the bruises that were displayed against her daughter's skin she began to sob. Praying to god that she was wrong. She was so stuck on thinking that she went through all the pain to avoid Kailyn being caused by any harm. Could she have been wrong? She felt so dumb and felt that once again she failed her daughter. It all made sense why Kailyn couldn't stand Carter and why she never called him dad or ever liked talking and being around him. How many more signs did she need? They were literally so many.
The thought of her husband putting hands on their daughter. The image made her sick. If she found out she was right, then everyone would know what she was capable of. She had already been through enough pain when dealing with that man so seeing him dead might've just gave her some peace. Not being able to keep thinking she had to know.
She shook her daughter gently and whispered, "Kai, did something ever happen between your dad and you. I guess I should say did he ever put hands on you too." As soon as the words left her mouth Kailyn eyes popped open in a realization.
