Roman learned that he should be loyal to Fire Lord Ozai and Fire Princess Azula. To agree with their plan to rule over all the element territories
Virgil learned that he should be loyal to his Tribe and stay safe within its walls, while training to be a warrior to defend his home
Both did not agree with their teachings
Roman was a follower of the AVATAR rather then Ozai and Azula. Instead he was loyal to Fire Prince Zuko and General Iroh
Virgil did not want to be a warrior, he wanted to be a healer. Everyone around him said that only females are healers. He trained in secret and quickly became very good at his craft
Lucky for them, Both Virgil and Roman are benders of their own element
Their paths were crossed when the Fire Nation army was sent to raid some of the Southern Water Tribe's land, looking for the last water bender in their village. Lives were lost that day, most notably Sokka and Kataras mother Kya, who Virgil looked up to
Roman was a part of the Fire Nation Army sent to raid the Southern Water Tribe. He got hurt from Southern Water Tribe weapons and needed some healing

Virgil helped Roman recover from his wounds
Roman decided to stay with Virgil, saying to his army mates and generals that he got captured by the Southern Water Tribe and he can escape by himself without any help from the Fire Nation
Roman fell in love with Virgil during his recovery, they confessed to each other and started dating. Roman got a ring and proposed to Virgil. They got married and had water and fire bending children. The family moved to Republic City when Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko united the four elements. Roman and Virgil lived in peace until their deaths
