Few days later, Selah opened her room and flicked the light switch towards the kitchen. She was a bit hungry and wanted to prepare a light midnight snack before completely sank into sleep. The familiar scene of the mansions’ living room came into view. She opened the fridge and got a slice of cake and a glass of milk. While pouring her milk in a glass, Selah heard a voice from the main gate outside. It was definitely Lilo’s voice but it’s too early for him to return to his flight. She thought it’s a week before he’ll be back at the mansion. Stunned and feeling as if her feet were filled with lead, Selah stood facing the tinted glass door with her eyes open wide. Her face turned red the moment she recognized the man’s voice. She shook her head thinking that maybe she’s just imagining things or even his voice. She took a deep breath to calm herself as she slightly opened the door. With a click, the door opened and there Lilo’s shocked face revealed in her sight.
“Sorry, did I wake you up? My friends were a bit noisy outside.” He plainly explained as he led himself in the living room and laid his travel bag in the sofa.
“No. I’m actually preparing a snack in the kitchen. I heard your voice outside so I slightly opened the door. I thought I was just imagining things until you appeared in my sight.” She explained.
“I see. Do you still have a spare of food for dinner? I haven’t eaten my dinner yet. I was in hurried to go back in here before the guard close the main gate of the village.
“What if you took a light shower first to freshen up? I’ll prepare your dinner instead.” She said calmly while drinking her glass of milk.
“Is it okay?” he asked in curiosity.
“It’s fine. After all, you’re tired from your flight and grandma is already sleeping.” She replied.
Lilo made his way upstairs and took a light shower. He took a warm bath. Thereafter, he wrapped his hips with a towel and used another one to dry his hair. When he came out of the bathroom, he noticed a picture frame on his bedside table. The room was a bit dark for he didn’t turn on all the lights. Only a wall lamp was turned on. But the darkness of the room was nothing in comparison to the picture he’s seeing right now.
“It seems like its grandma who put it here.” He said to himself. “It’s obviously she is. Selah wouldn’t do that in the first place.” He immediately went to his closet and put on some comfortable clothes.
“Did grandma visit my room?” he asked to Selah who was busy preparing his dinner in the table.
“I don’t think so. Why?” she asked casually.
“I was wondering who put our wedding picture in my bed side table.” He continued.
“It was her idea but it was me who put it there.” She replied.
“Oh, I see. Did you ask her why?”
“I tried to but she refused to explain.” She continued.
The water was dripping drop by drop from her wet hair. Selah noticed it from him. She could smell the fragrance of the body washed they used.
“I think you better dry first your hair. It’s like table manners,” she slightly teased him.
“Oh, okay.” He replied while smiling at her.
He went to the living room and got something from his bag. After that, he went back to the kitchen still wiping his hair.
“I get you with these as souvenirs for my flight in South California.” He said while handling set of books to her.
“These are all mine? “she surprisingly asked.
“Of course! But I’ll borrow some if I’m not busy. Thank you for taking care of grandma.” He finally said.
Instead of thanking him, Selah guide him to the table. “Eat with all your heart.” She jokingly said to him. It was a bit unusual for her to show such gestures Lilo just acted out casually. She didn’t joined Lilo in dinner but remained in the table unboxing the set of books and began reading it.
Lilo just glanced at her from time to time. He could see genuine smiles to Selah’s face while reading every pages of it. He didn’t expect that he could make her smile by just giving books. He would do it in the first place if he knew about it.
“You’re indeed a book reader.” He interrupted her reading. Selah just nodded without looking at him. Lilo just laughed at her. After eating his dinner, Selah was still sitting in her chair at the table continuously reading the book. She was surprised when Lilo grabbed her hand and led the way outside the mansion.
“Where are we going?” she asked while being dragged by him. They arrived in the pool area and there Lilo turned on the lights. The pool was great compared the last time she fell into it.
“Let’s stay here for a while. It’s still early.” He said to her while sitting near the pool area. Selah let go of her book and sat few inches away from him.
“You are not anymore cold at me.” He casually said to her while looking intently at the pool water.
“I tried to as what you said.” She replied.
“So, everything you did a while ago is true?” he asked while now looking intently to her.
“Perhaps.” She said doubtingly.
“You might be a good person Selah. Grandma and I didn’t doubt at you in the very beginning.” He continued.
“What do you mean by that?” Did you know about me before?” she asked.
“Honestly, we do. It’s not a coincidence that grandma brought you in the mansion.” He calmly shared. Selah was astonished but preferred to hear his explanation.
“We knew about you after three years my father passed away. In the hospital in his death bed, he handed me the contract I gave you last time. It’s legally made by him and your father back in their old days. No wonder why my family helped you that much in your finances.” He continued explaining.
“Are you saying I’m being arranged by my dad to you even before? I didn’t know about that. No one told me about that.” She replied.
“It’s between our family’s agreements. But I think, if there’s someone else who knew about this, it’s your grandmother.” He said.
“So, she knew about this.” She said to herself.
“Please don’t get mad. We made a clear contract within ourselves, right. I just want to share this with you to assure you that I won’t harm you.” He explained while looking back at the pool.
Selah was silent for a while.
“But, it’s my decision to settle with you. It’s not because our parents made an agreement before that I married you.” He tried to have another conversation with her.
Selah remained silent.
“That’s why I told you if you found someone else someday, we can file an annulment. I won’t demand for a child or even your attention. Just cooperate with me in this kind of arrangement. I know you don’t prefer it in the first place.” He still continued explaining.
But still, she remained silent.
“I’m sorry.” He finally said and was about to get up but Selah interrupted him.
“Can I apply in your company tomorrow? I was bored doing same routine in the mansion.” She replied calmly.
“You’re working with me?” he surprisingly asked.
“Why not? I might help you run your family’s business if you want.” She replied to him.
“Of course it’s a good idea.” He replied.
“I’ll send my application letter tomorrow.” She said.
“There’s no need. We could arranged a good position for you.” He convincingly said.
“I don’t like special treatment Lilo. I better send my documents and follow same process like other employees do.” She replied.
“Okay.”
They stayed there for a while until they decided to go inside because it was getting cold outside. They went inside each other’s room and get ready for sleep. They ended their conversation calmly so Lilo thought there’s no problem with her._______________________________________
