“You’re staring.”
It’s just a couple of words but it made Selah’s heart leap for a beat. And yet, she could as well feel calmness in it. She looked up to him to make sure it’s really him. Sure enough, he’s standing in front of the door at her back. The spacious room is actually giving her a slight of nervousness for she didn’t know who would enter to interview her.
“How do you do that? I didn’t notice you opened the door. What brings you here? Don’t you have a flight today?” Selah asked him continuously not aware that she sounds a bit nervous.
“Calm down. You’ve asked me four questions in a row.” He said while making his way to the pantry.
“Do you want coffee?” he asked her.
“No. I’m fine. Why are you here? Don’t tell me you will be the one who would conduct the interview?” she asked curiously.
“Of course…I’m not. That’s not a part of my job. But I could do that if you like.” He smiled jokingly while preparing his cup of coffee.
“So, why are you here?” she asked again.
“Selah, this is my room. This is my office.” He said confidently.
“Oh, did I enter the wrong room for the interview?” she asked.
“No, you’re not. This is where I asked to have your interview.” He said.
“I see. Maybe, you could go out after your coffee, right?” she said awkwardly.
“It depends. I can stay if I want to. But, I can leave if you like.” He said staring at her.
“You better leave.” She finally said.
She was a bit worried of how her voice sounded at him. She was a bit nervous at the same time uncomfortable in case he would sit for the interview. Few moments later, the interviewers came in and greeted Lilo who was still preparing his coffee. After that, he went out and the rest was all about the interview.
“Congratulations Miss Selah. You have an impressive resume’. You’ll surely be a good addition to our team. You can start tomorrow since we’re lacking people for the new project.” One of the interviewers said.
“Thank you. It’s my pleasure to work with your team.” She replied.
She went outside the company’s building after the interview. On her way to the parking lot where she parked her car, Lilo hurriedly came running after her.
“Wait!” he shouted.
Selah just turned around and saw him running towards her.
“How was it? Did they get you in?” he asked.
“Of course. Thanks.” She simply replied.
“Thanks for what?” he replied.
“Thanks for the offer. It’s better that I’ll be back to working.” She said.
“There’s no need to thank me. You got the job because they said you have an impressive resume’.” He said.
“That’s another reason. I have to go.” She said.
Lilo just walked her to the parking lot.It was still early in the morning and the golden sun shone on the city, bringing color to it. For Selah, today is a new start of her life and her job. Perhaps the goodness of it waits for her.
Subconsciously, Selah reached for her collarbone to feel her necklace. Her father gave it to her as a birthday gift ten years ago and she had been wearing it ever since. It was by no means an expensive piece of jewelry, but it was the gift she cherished the most.
“I’ll make you proud dad. I’ll assure it.” She said as she held her necklace. She felt like things were falling into place. Lilo might really be blessing in disguise for her despite of the arranged marriage she’d been into.
She casually put her files in the seat next to her. The game had begun.
“I’ll surely make her regret for the rest of her life; for abandoning us both.” She thought to herself.
Back to the mansion, Selah returned home safe. But to her surprise, she saw men wearing suits and looked like bodyguards. She got curious so she entered at the backdoor instead of the main entrance. As soon as Selah realized that it was her mother sitting prettily in the living room while Lilo’s grandma was serving her with a cup of coffee, she hurriedly went to her with a cold face.
“What do you think are you doing here?” she said in a high pitch tone.
“Oh, that’s your way of welcoming a guest in your house or should I say your husband’s house.” She replied sarcastically.
She controlled her anger and composed herself well.
“Oh, that’s right! This is our house since I married him few weeks ago in case you didn’t heard about it. So, I have the authority to throw you out of this place. Please be kind to me or else..” she was interrupted by her mom.
“…Or else what? Can you now do something to me? Should I prepare myself for it?” she asked with full of sarcasm.
“Oh, you better be. I might do something you’ll surely regret. But don’t worry. I won’t take your life. That’s how my dad raised me. “ she confidently replied.
Her mother was surprised to what she heard from her. But, she didn’t let her go so easily.
“By the way, I didn’t come her to argue with you. I came personally to arrange an appointment with your husband regarding business. Unfortunately, he’s not here.” She continued.
“If that so, you better leave because he’s not here. And in case you don’t know, he doesn’t take appointments in this mansion. He has an office. It’s called work etiquette. You better practice that next time you'll meet him.” She finally said and headed upstairs with victory in her eyes.
Few moments after she heard her mom’s car left the mansion, Lilo’s grandma knocked to her room. She opened it for her.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know.” She humbly said.
“It’s okay grandma. You don’t know after all.” She replied.
“You look terrible a while ago. I haven’t seen you like that before. She’s your mother, right?”
“Yes, she is grandma. But, it’s been fifteen years since she became a mother to me. Since then, I didn’t recognize her as one.” She replied.
“I might not know your pain but you can talk to me anytime you want, Selah.” She said.
“Thank you, grandma.” She replied to her.
Her face streaked with tears and she hurriedly hugged her. The pain is too deep. Until now, she can’t simply share it to anyone- even to her. The old woman just tapped her shoulder to give comfort and warmth. After that, she rushed downstairs to prepare Selah her lunch.
