For the past five years Selah’s mom abandoned them, she became cold and domineering to anyone except for her dad. Despite these changes from her attitude, her grandma stayed with her for the longest run. She was in deep thoughts when Lilo’s grandma came knocking in a slightly open door.
“Can I come in?” the woman asked politely.
“Sure. Please do.” She said in a very little voice of her.
“Did I disturb your thoughts?” she continued.
“No. Not very much.” She replied.
“Selah, I know it’s never been my right to intervene whatever is between you and my son Lilo. But, I want you to know that I’m very confident that you won’t regret marrying him. “ Lilo’s grandma said while intently looking at her.“Our situation is very different grandma. We’re marrying not out of love but for our own benefits.” She said while trying to open up to the old woman.
“I’m aware of that, dear. We talked about it few days ago before you have your second visit in this mansion. I know his concern and yours. He tried to look for some solutions but always ended up to that.” The old woman comforted her.
“You’re too kind grandma. Usually, parents don’t like their daughter-in-law. But yours is different. Haven’t he shared to you what I’ve said to him last time we talk about marriage?” I asked her. However, her face was still as waters.
“That you would just end up using him?” she asked directly in my eyes.
“Perhaps.” I unconsciously replied.
“No, he doesn’t think about it. I knew Lilo since he was this five year-old bulky boy who love playing in my garden. Until now, his heart never changes. So, if you think you would be misled by marrying him, I totally guaranteed that you’re not. “She answered securely.
She just smiled at her. That moment, she wished her dad was still alive. She would certainly have one person explaining for her when she can’t understand herself. Like grandma, he would surely see her warmth over coldness that she brought to anyone. He would definitely build her kindness to anyone over her domineering side.
The sun beat down hard the next day after the heavy rain last night. Outside the mansion, a middle-aged woman dressed in a stunning dark-colored floral print dress waved her arm calling out her attention. The woman was quite elegant for her age and had a shapely body. Out of respect, she waved her back. But, the woman motioned her hand to join her at the garden.
“Please don’t. You won’t like her.” It was Lilo at her back commanding her. Seeing the man’s face, it’s obvious that the lady was familiar to him. He wore a cold face while staring at her from the garden. Selah wanted to ask him but because of what she did last night, no words could escape from her throat. Until they got inside the car, she was still speechless and observant. The silence between them was interrupted by a call from her phone. She moved a little from the driver’s seat, took a deep breath and reach for the phone in her pocket.
Selah subconsciously raised her voice and glanced at him when she realized it was her mother on the phone. She turned it off and quickly composed herself and glanced back at him.
“Where are you going after this?” she sheepishly asked.
“Why do you even ask?” he cold asked her.
“Take me with you, anywhere. Just don’t go back to the resort.” She commanded.“Are you commanding me again?” he coldly asked her while driving.
Instead of answering back, she reached for her phone in her pocket. She dialed few names on her screen but no one answered back to her. Observing her, Lilo knew that she was a bit annoyed since no one in her list answered the call. Again, she turned off her phone and slack at her seat.
“I have a VIP trip today. That’s why I couldn’t come and accompany you.” He said coldly but there was a bit of gentleness to his tone.“It’s okay.” She simply replied. This time, her voice was polite but distant as if she was speaking to a complete stranger.
“But, I can arrange a flight for you.” He replied to her.Once again, she was speechless. A powerful but gentle voice spoke to her. Without hesitation, she nodded her head. She took a deep breath and flashed a light smile on her face. She didn’t know, Lilo saw it from the top mirror of her car.
They arrived at the airport almost eight o’clock. Lilo directly went to someone at the VIP desk and booked a flight for her. It wasn’t the same flight with him. After that, he went back to her.
“Here’s your ticket. It would be the next after this VIP flight. I’ll ask Connie to accompany you for a while since both of you would be joining the same flight.” He calmly said.
“New Zealand? Where I would be staying there? I didn’t bring my card or anything with me after I get there.” She worriedly explained.
“No need. We’re staying in the same hotel. Once I get there, I will call you so pick up my call.” His voice was gentle but still Selah could feel a distance between them.
It was already two o’clock when Lilo arrived at the airport. He waited for Selah for another four hours for the next flight. It was passed seven when Selah arrived at the airport. There, she saw Lilo in his complete suit as pilot. She was a bit awkward how manly and respectful he is on his suit.
“How’s the flight?” he simply asked her while leading his way to the car the airline provided for him.
“It’s a bit crowded.” She replied.
“I’ve expected that.” He finally said.Lilo opened the backseat door to put his bag and his cap. Selah thought she would ride at the backseat but the man opened the door next to the driver’s seat for her.
“I’m sure you won’t take me as your driver.” He coldly said while letting her inside the car. Selah didn’t bother to start a conversation with him since the energy she has was already drained in the flight. Instead, she tried to pretend his words didn’t affect her. She got the phone from her pocket and acted like nothing happened. Lilo glanced at her for several times but he didn’t say anything until they arrived at the hotel. The receptionist welcomed them and led her way to their room. Lilo booked an adjacent room for Selah. The receptionist gave to them the card for each room. Soon as Lilo was about to enter his room, Selah spoke to him.
“I’m hungry. Can we at least grab something to eat?” Selah’s voice trailed off. She scrunched her face because she knew they were not still in good terms. Instead of answering her, Lilo completely entered the room and shut the door. Selah’s eyes were a bit red. She knew any moment; her eyes would well up tears. Mixed emotions from her mother’s early call forcing her to return to the company, crowded flight, and Lilo’s coldness to this trip were good enough reason to be so tired and sensitive. Instead of asking him again, Selah decided to sleep than wait for nothing. Soon enough as she was about to fall asleep, someone came knocking at her door. She thought it would be the receptionist or a staff from the hotel. So, she casually opened the door. To her surprise, it was Lilo holding a key in his hand.
“Let’s go.” He grabbed her hand and walk along the hallway. She was trying to take it back but he was man enough of strength. Instead of loosen her up, Lilo held her hand tightly. She thought perhaps he was already guilty of his actions and speech.
Meanwhile at the entrance of the hotel, two men waved at them. Looking intently, they were both familiar to her. One is the pilot who was with him in the VIP flight while the other is someone she saw in her trip.
“I heard that you had your girlfriend with you.” The man wearing a black shirt teased him while approaching her.
“It’s Selah.” He said to them.
“I’m Franco, his co-pilot” Franco initiated to introduce himself.
“This is Vann, our head chef.” He continued his unfinished introduction.
“Let’s go! Selah might be hungry from the flight.” Franco teasingly said to him.Lilo just smirked at him. He didn’t bother to reply at him. He just flipped his phone in his hand. Vann was silent compared to them.
Vann ordered the food for them. He asked Selah of what she preferred to eat and didn’t bother to ask the other guys. Selah was sitting beside Lilo opposite to Vann and Franco. Their orders were served one by one. Hungry and tired, Selah didn’t bother to engage in their conversation unlike what they did. After all, she didn’t know that much about their topic.
